I get a little emotional every time I watch this ending... It's just so well designed both audially and narratively. This was a perfect recreation, excellent job.
What started as cute little animations had turned into an obvious goal of reanimating all of the most iconic Portal 2 moments in this cool, detailed, humanoid are style.
I love how Chell won this fight out of pure spite. She had lost, the entire facility was going to explode, and she saw the moon and thought "You know what would be really ******* funny right now?" There's no way she imagined herself surviving that. Also how Wheatley's dialogue cuts off right after you fire, as if he realizes what you've done, but is taking a moment to process the sheer stupidity.
I like the idea that he gets so lost in his own thoughts and rambling that he's not properly paying attention to Chell blowing him up with his own bombs or releasing the white gel.
For a machine created with the sole purpose of being stupid, I think it’s interesting that he actually (kinda) learned from Glados’ mistakes.
Edit: also pretty interesting that he presumably knew that bringing chell to his chamber was a bad idea, which is why he instead opted to just kill her with the spike plates (which evidently didn’t work). But all of this was the ultimate show of stupidity; as he was too busy trying to kill chell to actually work on keeping the facility functional and not exploding.
If you think about it, Wheatley wasn't bad at planning at all. His plans worked. The escape plan with turning off the neurotoxin and hack the turret assembly? Worked. Setting up the trap where he unexpectedly throw you the other way? Even GLaDOS admitted it was good. Checking the records on the previoua fighzlt with GLaDOS to figure out countermeasures? Almost worked as well. He even hide the 5th part of his 4-part plan: boobie trap the stalemate button.
He wasn't stupid at all. His downfall wasn't his intelligence, but his attention, or lack of it. His mindset. He was constantly focusing on the wrong things. He was an example of a competent guy constantly being on the wrong place.
Sea Maggie, you're a gift. Felt real genuine emotions at that last moment where Chell holds on to Wheatley. Him being humanized makes it so much more harrowing.
