Deer Dance is another must!!!!

6:34 “Kombucha mushroom people sitting around all day” paints a picture of lazy, passive people who sit around all day complaining, following weird trends, and believing strange things without doing anything real. It’s mocking hipster/underground lifestyle followers who drink kombucha and act enlightened.

My friends and I used to have a saying when we thoight we weren't getting enough or the right information on a pertinent matter. We called it being a mushroom person because it felt like being kept in the dark and fed sh*t which is the loosest way to describe how a mushroom grows.

IMHO, this is mocking the ones who mock the "kombucha mushroom people". Because the peace loving hippies are doing no harm, not engaging in the craziness of society. Just want to live peacefully and not interested in consumerism or the rat race. The images of the business men and police officer are portrayed as the crazy ones, obsessed with chasing their tales to "get ahead" (or in the case of the cop, obsessed with career and power but going home and beating the crap out of his partner) are the ones doing the real damage. Society creates the hellscape.

Holy shit, you look on your face was priceless.  I’ve always loved system of the down your reactions are great!!

“My vocals on Sugar are intentionally all over the place,” he wrote. “There are parts where I’m doing this sort of fast, poetic rambling in a psychotic, schizophrenic kind of voice… To this day, I don’t really have any idea what the song is about, other than it being angsty and kind of our ‘Fuck you!’ song – not unlike Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In The Name.”-Serj Tankian Metal hammer interview 2026

This song was the first reference to kombucha I'd heard in the 90s; the second was in Deadwood Season 2 and the third was from Joe Rogan which got me to start buying the probiotic drinks at the grocery store... 🍵🌠

BTW the anchor at the beginning said "I'm Eric Alost..." (America Lost)

12:30 this whole section of the song predicts the inevitable outcome of mass shooters

SOAD "Suggestions" is pretty great too :)

The WTF reaction at the beginning then "ok"

after every song it's like what?! or wtf!? lol yup that's the best way to Describe this band to anyone that has never herd them those where my 2 questions when I first herd them then I played it again and really listened  to what they where saying  which made me really think lol

Just watching your face through this was priceless! SOAD and their lyrics can do that, most of their songs cause that look

Kombucha was fairly popular in the 90's, especially among office workers, as a "detox" drink, bs to sell products, the only really reliable detox agents are the liver and kidneys, anyway, it might be related to that, kombucha people sitting around all day in their offices.

There's a lot of symbolism here. But overall, the song is a commentary on how chaotic and unpredictable life can be, and how it can present all sorts of surprises. But the main theme is drug addiction. The video features the caption "aspartame kills" several times in a single frame, which is tantamount to saying there's no cure or alternative medicine that will solve your problems.

I've always seen this criticism as American foods being loaded with sugar to get you hooked and buying the sweeter version every time, even if it's bread or something like that. It's just another thing, a "system" that's in your control. Even BP, while in Europe, immediately noticed the difference in the food.

In my opinion, this is a cautionary tale about how cheaper substitutes (sugar: aspartame) and fads aren't always good for you. Like with "kombucha," which was a health fad when people made kombucha at home, which could easily be contaminated. And the reason the song is called "sugar" is because aspartame, a sugar substitute, is linked to increased irritability and aggression, despite the FDA deeming it safe (hence domestic violence and gun purchases).
Things labeled "safe" can easily have hidden costs, so don't be too quick to trust the government, the media, or the public.

Yeah, this was the song in the day!
