Another thing people don’t talk about is the Renaissance influences in the style. Medieval Y2K is another niche style trending online and I can’t help but notice the similarities

Pre-Raphaelite art and design became popular in the 90s, which influenced the look we call whimsigoth today (to be more specific about the Victorian influences). The romantic art of the English Victorian era which portrayed legend and fantasy themes in realistic, detail oriented styles. Art Nouveau, too, although perhaps less so than in the 60s. But the 60s in general were highly influential on 90s aesthetic cultures.

My two favorite aesthtics are Dark Academia and Whimsigoth, cause they all fit my personality.

This is basically what my favorite Uncles house looked like with a fully hand painted celestial ceiling and I miss them

When I was growing up in the 90's we simply called this 'Witchy', as you mentioned. It was a BIG thing, although where I come from we could only experience it on tv shows and films. Then you grew up, got your own home & (a little) money and BOOM. Living the best witchy life 😁😉💜🧙‍♀️🧹

This was the bedroom style of almost all of us girls who were teenagers in the 1990s. My friends and I all had the celestial designs on pretty much everything we owned. It was just everywhere.

Whimsygoth saved me as a child of the 90s being raised Pagan in the bible belt. The only place my existence was "acceptable" was in the shows and books that had this level of magic and whimsy.

Just to say, 1902 is Edwardian - Queen Victoria died in 1901.

When talking about Whimsy Goth a lot of people focus on films and TV shows from the late 90s but it's very much present in many music videos of the early 90s. Especially British artists but American artists such as Tori Amos and The Smashing Pumpkins had whimsy goth music videos.

I feel like Bewitched (from the 1970s with Elizabeth Montgomery) is one of the precursors to the 90s/00s film/tv shows which Bewitched ran for 8 seasons I believe and they switched Darrens (it went from Dick York to Dick Sargent in the more mid-later seasons). It does feature a lot of gaslighting though (so does Sabrina The Teenage Witch - the 90s version), but also I would say Twitches (one and two) the Disney franchise also falls under the whimsigoth style.

I'm so glad I have a daughter so I can get to tell my 10yr old ALL ABOUT this stuff what I grew up with. :D

This is how I discover my room is already leaning towards whimsigoth

This was a good video, interesting and informative. In the 20-teens and 2020s it seems like styles and aesthetics have had to be labeled, something or other core, or whatever. I think we’re getting over “statement” pieces, which started with statement necklaces and spread out into everything, statement toothbrushes (kidding). I think (hope) that’s over. Just decorate and dress in what you love. You don’t need a defined label for validation. I’m not critiquing this particular video, just making a general observation. I really liked this video because it touches upon my very point yet is also a sort of tutorial, thoughtfully done. 💜

This was the best description of the different aesthetics I have ever come across. I enjoyed listening to you, and you chose beautiful pictures to underline your take in things. Thank you, and I hope you will get much more views and viewers.❤

There are some aspects of this that I really like, along with Dark Academia and Gremlincore. Thanks for the fun overview! =)

Very cool to learn about this. Seems like there are so many aesthetics coming out now, people putting names to things we grew up with but never really knew what to call. I'm a fan of the Vaporware, Utopian Scholastic, and Global Village Coffee House aesthetics. Whimsigoth definitely reminds me of the 90s. Nice work! 👍
