Due to arthritis in both hands, and gout in my left foot, at age 55 I had to give up riding. The pain has just taken the fun out of it. Fast forward 10 years, I had just retired, and ran into an old friend who was on a 2010 Executive. I kind of chuckled at first, then he said “take it for a ride”. A week later, I had an 09 Exec one owner low mile Exec in my driveway. I couldn’t believe how comfortable it was to ride, how much power it delivers, and how smoothly it handles basically any road. I was back in the wind, and loving retirement. I took it from my home in New England, to Yellowstone park on an incredible road trip. I just purchased my second, a 2015 model and still got a good price on my first one. The only regret I have about buying a Burgie, is that I didn’t do it sooner!!! Just bought an '09 Burgman w/ 12K miles this week after 20+ off a bike...and rode it the 300 miles home over the next day and a half.  She's a big heavy beast in slow speed riding and parking lots....but get her out on the highway, and she moves!  No problems cruising at 65-75.....and I once discovered that It had creeped up to 86 MPH while I was distracted.  She danced up 6 miles of 6% grade like it was no bother while semis and small cars struggled. The previous owner had fitted her with a plush leather Corbin seat, and an oversize Givi windscreen and 47 liter top-box.  And proved herself ready for long-distance touring.

The Suzuki Burgman 650 is an incredible machine. Comfortable, quick, capable, looks great, people that buy them tend to keep them!

A friend bought a Burgman 400.  She had me look it over.  I fell in love with it!  She recently sold it.  I want a Burgman 650!

Enjoy the overview. I had many gold wings, but the 650 is one of the best out there. I've had my 2009 for three years and love it. The only thing I don't like is the weight. I guess considering the bike size, probably not bad. The other thing I learned pretty quick is not to turn sharply at low speeds. Once the bike starts to fall, it's almost impossible to stop. Also backing up with the bike when you have a rider can be a little intimidating. Since I've learned my lesson, I put the side stand down, and ask the rider to get off. Then I walk the bike back if need be. I never remember having that issue with the gold wings, but stopped riding for many years. When I started back, I decided to go with scooters. I purchased a Burgman 400 in almost perfect condition. I was 72 at that time. It was a good ride, but I felt that it was lacking with my wife and I together, I started looking and reading about the best out there, and the 650 Burgman kept popping up. I started looking, and one day at the home Depot a older gentleman walked up to me and asked if I would like to buy another one. He told me he had a 650 Burgman that had been sitting for years. He said he bought it and then had to have several leg operations that pretty much stopped the riding and he was ready to let it go if I was interested. I told him I look at it but no promises. When I pulled the cover off, the tires were flat battery dead and in need of some TLC. I took a chance an offered him 2000 as s. I brought the bike home, replaced the battery, fuel pump assembly, tires, cleaned hoses and flushed injectors. On the third turn of the key it started with a little smoke because I sprayed the cylinders with cleaning solution. After a minute the smoke cleared, and it run very smoothly. The odometer only had 278 original miles on it. This Burggie had never been back for its 600 mile check up. I did change all fluids and flushed the radiator. Also installed a new thermostat. I have 1800 miles on the bike now. I spent 1400 getting ready to run and pass the Maryland Inspection. 3400 dollars total. I'm 77 now, and I truly believe that was I was lucky that day. Since then the gentleman that sold the bike to me has gone home to be with the father. We had become good friends and he told me that he was glad I purchased the bike because he knew I would take care of it.

I have a 2015 650 Burgman and absolutely love it. I tour all over New Zealand.

This is the old model. The 2013 onwards had a complete cvt redesign with a much longer lasting belt, significantly reduced engine braking and better fuel economy.
I had a 02' and 08' executive, but my current 17' is way superior in every department. Any Burgman 650 is better than nothing though 😊

I added a Corbin seat to mine & that adds a lot more leg room. I also out a laminar lip on the stock windshield & it's perfect now. I also added a brakeaway throttle lock & that's great for touring.

What a superb and very thorough review of your Suzuki.I got back into riding in my late 60's with a Honda Forza 350 which I think is a brilliant device and echo all your comments about the practicality and sheer fun of scooter ownership. Living in the UK, I think the Yamaha Tech Max is the nearest to your Suzuki but they retail for circa £14000 which makes them a niche purchase but nevertheless highly thought of. Honda Forza's retail for about £6000.Being similar to you in height I ride with an open-face helmet similar to a Shoei J Cruise 3 and can adjust the visor and screen so that wind blast is virtually eliminated and long range touring becomes a relaxing affair.Oddly enough I always feel refreshed and invigorated after a scooter ride.Thanks again.

Good point about making more use of the rear brake because of the handlebar lever. I have a little Ninja 300, I use a lot of rear brake or both as pads are cheap.

Hello from Australia. Ex-Goldwing owner now 2018 Burgman Exec owner. A great two-up proposition. The auto is smooth so accelerating does not jerk the pillion around and coming to a stop is super easy because both feet can be going for the ground because there are no gears to change or back brake pedal to operate. I removed the rider backrest and my wife and I can get on and off easily (we leave it the sidestand and she gets on first). I have Givi top box and panniers and touring two-up is great. Regarding the suspension - it could be better but we find just slowing down a little helps it out a lot. I really like the leg position options. A throttle lock is a handy addition. My only complaint - it sounds boring!

Stop Press: Rear shock position 2 (as recomended by Suzuki) is great solo while two-up I find position 4 works very well.
