Did Arthur manage to redeem himself? Was his redemption dubious at best because of where he was headed and there was no changing that?

Arthur-“My son was killed I………”
Rain falls-“Oh damn that’s crazy. Hold up, I gotta go pick some flowers

I'm not a fan of the take that Arthur wouldn't have redeemed himself without TB. Considering the gang's previous ideals and Arthur’s disdain to the more “dirty” criminal work, I think it was only a matter of time and might just take a little bit longer. At that time of the end of Chapter 5 and beginning of Chapter 6 (depending on gameplay), he was already planning to rescue John against Dutch's wish before he knew he had TB. He was actually going to Sadie to do something about it before he started coughing. Arthur was losing faith in Dutch in Guarma, and when he saw him choke that old woman, he called him out. He didn't know about his tuberculosis before he noticed the red flags that Dutch was getting more and more deranged. There are periodic prompts to talk to Mary Beth about how Arthur doesn’t feel comfortable with how many people he’s been hurting and he clearly hates what Strauss does and questions Dutch’s decision making early on in the game. Knowing he was dying just accelerated the process of what was building up.

You and me, we're more ghosts than people.

Not sure if you guys know, but Roger Clark has recently been Livestreaming his playthrough of RDR2. It’s actually pretty meta and pretty interesting to see his perspective

I wholly believe that Arthur would have redeemed himself even without TB. If you read the journal you see he's already experiencing moral dilemmas and feel the pull towards the light. He's disgusted by what the gang has become, he's ashamed of himself. He hates Micah, he despises Strauss and his loansharking schemes, he calls out Dutch on his increasing madness and bullshit. Like I said I wholly believe had Arthur not contracted TB he would've still redeemed himself and move away from the gang, it would have just taken him a longer time to do so.

I never saved Jimmy Brooks on my 1st playthrough so when I saved him when I was doing my High Honor playthrough I literally had goosebumps with the way Arthur threatened him (Dude literally snitched on himself and confirmed that he would put bro in a ditch for snitching)

Rains Fall interrupting Arthur just to pick ginseng is a key moment and tonal shift in Arthur's growth as a herbalist.

Arthur's redemption is that he wanted to break the cycle. He tried to save John, Abigail, and Jack, and temporarily, he did. He helped people in the end, not to make up for what he'd done, but because he made the unconscious decision that it was the right thing to do. He didnt help Rains Fall to redeem himself, he helped Rains Fall because it was the right thing to do. Because he had already decided that he didnt care about money anymore. Knowing he was dying meant that money didnt matter anymore, and when money stopped being important, he realized he just wanted to what he believed was right. That was part of his redemption. He didnt want forgiveness. He just wanted others to not follow his path.

I think Arthur never believed he could redeem all his wrongs although his bad deeds seem to be mostly out of sacrifice for the ones he most cares about, never himself. The fact after losing nearly everything, he still continues to save those he could from the gangs collapse being high or low honor should be worth something.

This damn game makes me cry every time

To be relied upon by those you love is the greatest of joys, and the most terrible of curses. Depending on who you love.

Arthur losing Eliza and Isaac hardened him. And those characters are mirrored in what Arthur sees with Abigail and Jack, and Edith and Archie. And since he wasn't able to be there to help Eliza and Isaac and save them, he doesn't want to see that happen to anyone else again.

I do not agree with the take that Arthur was only seeking redemption because of his sickness. In fact, the game proves otherwise. He was already doing acts of kindness before he even knew that he had tuberculosis. He was wrestling with his morality long before they even arrived at Colter. Do I think that his sickness made things clear to him? Definitely, but he was already beginning to question things before that.

Oh Arthur.. I loved his story so much

Frankly, I think redemption is in intent and action, and not so much that circumstance matters as much.

An interesting note i'd like to mention.
Arthur meets and effects on  families who struggle a lot in life. A lot of times a single parent/child type lets say which resonates with him more as that's what he lost.
Abigail/Jack (considering John being so distant from them for a while)
Downes family
Rains Fall/Eagle Flies
Londonderry family
Mary/Jamie (even thought Jamie was her brother, but they still symbolised a broken family considering their bad relationship with Mr Gillis)
German family (helping them bringing back the father)
Maybe other cases too if there were any.

Feels like his tragic past (with Elisa/Isaac) haunts him and crosses his journey during the whole story and gives him a chance to do good for others so they'll have a better life that him and his family did.

His redemption was a journey from the very beginning indeed. Trying to keep families together and giving a chance for a better future.

What's this..

ANOTHER hour-long video on RDR2/Arthur Morgan??
I shall watch video number 38 on this Masterpiece.

I'm on my 7th playthrough, Still discovering new easter eggs..
I can't even play as an Outlaw Arthur anymore, other than Chapter 2..
Those horrible endings just don't sit right with me 😅

Arthur's last ride, (after he saves Abigail from Agent Milton.) Always makes my eyes teary, (if he's Honorable.) And of course also when he's at the mountain cliff after fighting Micah, and looking towards the sunrise. To me, he found his REDEMPTION!

I'd say John's tragedy has less to do with him deciding to go back for Micah and more for settling about five minutes outside of the town where he participated in the single act that most increased his infamy, using his real name.
