"As he then bakes a non-existent cake, in a non-existent oven, summoning a non-existent elevator, causing the entire Hoenn region to not exist." Average Baki fight
Pokémon Snakewood, in an odd way, to me, is a game about growing up. Like, the game is not a story with a coherent plot, it’s a series of events only dictated by the desire for creation and putting whatever hyper fixation or imagined idea the creator put in. With the ending feeling like something an old version or some who long since lost the initial spark writing in a semi-cynical to semi-tribute to your childhood self, spiteful yet loving. I don’t know if that makes sense, but that’s what playing snakewood means, at least, to me.
Many years ago, I was at Spirit Halloween with my cousins. We were watching a batch of crude robotic zombie babies crawl around a play pen. An awkward teenage girl walked up to join us and said "this looks like something in a Pokemon rom hack I played." It wasn't until several years later that I realized she was probably talking about this game.
I love how Alicia feels like she was based on the dude’s high school girlfriend that broke up with him so he randomly trashed the character and all the set up then ignored her for the rest of the story.
theres this twitter account called "images AI could never recreate". this like, pretty solidly describes a majority of my feelings on the game. there will never be another pokemon snakewood.
So fun fact about the starters, Cutlerine made them bad on purpose. According to an old post he made in the original Snakewood thread, he expected the player to abandon their starter once better options became avalable, and was continuously baffled that the players of Snakewood in 2011 became so attached to the "shitmons" to the point where most would take them to endgame. It's also kinda amusing that from a balance perspective, all the starters (except Baltoy, rip bozo) had a niche they could fill in the early game. Both Paras and Koffing had access to easy poisoning moves which allowed the player to have good damage over time in a game where every enemy would be 5-15 levels higher at all times and Paras had pretty much every status aliment available to make catching mons and cheesing bosses easier. This also meant that they were some of the only options you had to take down the second (Third?) Gym leader's King Madio, due to Wonder Guard not blocking Leech Seed/Poison Gas/Poison Powder.
There being more than seven members of the deadly seven, and said members crawling under the table in the boardroom to battle you again remains hilarious.
I'm glad that art like snakewood exist. It's so interesting and even inspiring to see someone put out something without any concern over if others can understand it or not.
There's really nothing else like it, for better or for worse.
This game feels like the romhack version of an early 2010's era fanfiction. It's got it all. The self insert character that won't shut up, edge that isn't edgy, a bunch of pop culture and anime references, the lol random XD humor, and a plot that goes on for way too long and makes no sense.
Interesting thing: the reason why the player's palette fucks up is basically unavoidable and is the result of how RSE distributes palettes. Chances are, since the crate and Toxicroak sprites were using 16 unique colors, whatever Binary hacking program that was used to make Snakewood assigned them to the same palette index as the player character. As a result, the palette for the player character (who was loaded first) gets fucked up as it's now using a misaligned palette. This is also why this gets reversed when doing things like using a pokemon on the overworld, because that animation set and its palette have just been loaded in.
This does also mean that Brendan and May's sprites actually couldn't be used, at least not without adjusting to reduce the number of colors used in order to fit with the NPC palettes (Though possibly you could set them to use one of those in that particular scene since there's only 4 characters on screen? I forget how many palettes RSE can load at once)
HOWEVER: RSE also has a single other index for unique NPCs besides the player, that's designed to use 16 colors (the other palettes technically do as well, but most NPCs using them will only use 4 in order to spread that among multiple NPCs). This index is how sprites like Rayquaza, Lugia or Ho-oh's overworld sprites can have 16 colors. So presumably the dev either didn't know about this or didn't care enough to fix it. Or it's binary hacking tools being subpar.
I think that part of Snakewood's... """beauty""" is how there's absolutely nothing like it, and there will continue to be nothing like it for years to come. Not just because of the circumstances that lead to its creation, but because, as a whole, the world has very much changed since Snakewood came out. No longer are messy ROM hacks / fan games the norm, Pokemon fan games have evolved (not to mention we've gotten like 4 generations worth of stuff since Snakewood came out!), and overall game philosophy and design are much different / better understood then they were when this hack came out.
Stuff like this is why I love deep looks into old fan games and such (like this video; I was so excited when I randomly got recommended a near 3-hour video on this trainwreck of a game); the world was simply different back then, and there's so many ideas and executions that just wouldn't fly in today's way of creating things. It's like a relic of a bygone era, just only some 10-15 years old as opposed to decades or centuries.
While this romhack is largerly forgotten, it lives through other romhack - Pokemon Wack (its how i even learned about Pokemon Snakewood in the first place). There is basically entire section of maps with Pokemon Snakewood based pokemon. Yes, including the Madio. They have their own cave system!
Since its optional zone, there isnt really any plot to it, but it sure has lots of mons. Interestingly, zombie is a type in Pokemon Wack, one of main ones at that, so adding zombie pokemon from other romhack is a very logical step actually, since they added A LOT of other media type mods. It's one of more logical inclusions to Pokemon Wack roster honestly.
pokemon snakewood is a beautiful disaster
