Pokémon Snakewood – The WORST Pokémon ROM Hack Ever Created

Happy Halloween everyone! Welcome to 2021's Halloween Special episode! I have a small personal history with Pokémon Snakewood. Mostly, that it's total horse $h!t. A game built off of Pokémon generation 3 (Ruby specifically), Snakewood introduces a dark twist on the traditional formula. Mainly, the "zombiemon." Or zombie Pokémon. It has been bashed and beaten more than any ROM hack really has the right to be, but does it deserve it? That's a definite yes, but I want to dig a little deeper into the story, and find out why it was such a disaster. Get your candy corn and jack-o-lanterns ready. It's time to dive deep into Pokémon Snakewood!

This person clearly did not want to write a pokemon story. He wanted to write a dark fantasy story with demons and people with spiritual powers, but the only game engine he knew to work with was Pokemon rom hacks.

Snakewood: "This is an edgy, dark, ultra gritty version of the Pokémon adventure"
Also Snakewood: "LOL how do you like overpowered Pokémon you can never catch, also solve this quiz entirely made up of the author's own inside jokes or return to the beginning of the dungeon"

making a ragebait island called Calm is so funny i can't even be mad at cutlerine for it

As an actual Taoist I personally think it’s awesome that my way of life has been interpreted as “Zombie killing Wizards”

Pikasprey's playthrough of Snakewood is legendary if you want to see the whole game. He starts so optimistic until he loses everything

I kinda respect Snakewood for simply existing. It's a fuck up, yeah, but you're right. What creator hasn't made hot garbage? Getting the trash out is the first step in creation.

Just so you know. That Hajike and the ENTIRE DEADLY SEVEN is just one big reference to an anime called "Bobobo-Bobo-Bo-Bobo".

This game is the embodiment of "You can't learn from the mistakes you make if you don't make mistakes"

honestly it's crazy that we got to see this hack at all. this is like a middle schoolers first attempt at drawing an anime character following a "how to draw manga" book getting displayed in the louvre

I feel for the creator, it's clear that they were kids when they did it. They did go all the way and made an entire hack, so it should have taken a long ass time.

I just hope they come back to creating hack roms as an adult. Able to grasp the flaws of the first and avoiding them.

Snakewood is kind of the "the room" of the pokemon romhack world. Like it is pretty bad, but its enjoyable to poke fun at it and has a lot of charm and memorable moments. I remember liking the game when I was younger and I'd honestly still re-play just for the nostalgia value

God I remember back when some let’s player did the first like 2% of Snakewood and I just assumed it was a zombie invasion type game for the longest time. Knowing what it truly was fucks with my mind.

"I didn't even know screenshot Let's Plays were a thing"

How are you gonna make a 26 year old feel so goddamn old?

Genuinely forgot Meteor was the name of the dragon, I was expecting the daughter to be a person not an egg

The mystery egg evolved into a 2025 Chevy Equinox ad for me

A few years back, someone started work on a remake of this game. It was well into its production before the owner got bored with it and discontinued the project. It had full Sprite overhauls, new npc designs, the whole lot. They even made a discord for its progress. I was helping pull people into it so they could have more support and such. Sadly, last year it was cut. The whole project was abandoned and the discord was deleted. This game holds a special place in my heart for being the first hack I've ever played. I want to try and pick up its spaghetti guts and finish what was started of this blessed piece of garbage that I love so much.

Pokemon Clover's "postgame" postgame features the Deadly Seven to which made me look up their origin, leading me to Pokemon Snakewood. From one rom hack to another, one was great albeit offensive game that I replayed three times while on the other hand, the other was a scorching dumpster fire that I wish to never play again.

@WaryObserver 4 years ago

I never got why sites recommended this as a "must play" Rom Hack. The story is stupid, and the balance is bad. Want a good Pokémon Zombie game? I recommend Dusk/Dawn/Nightfall.

I had a lot more fun imagining going through this game as a silent version of the female trainer with a talking Baltoy (both of which are perpetually bewildered by the terrible writing) in a sort of Jak and Daxter-type dynamic. I think that would've been more entertaining than this tryhard drivel that Cutlerine sneezed onto a word document.

17:29 Exactly why I love Po Town from Sun & Moon. You don't usually expect an evil team to live in a town and even run the PokeCenter there. The fact that the PokeCenter is way different is what makes areas like this super memorable IMO.
