Humans finding the habitat of a species is like the kiss of death for that species.

I’m enough of decrepit old husk to remember when a living giant squid had never been filmed or photographed. Some, not all, but some of the magic is gonna be lost once we finally catch one of these whales alive on camera

I saw a dead beaked whale on Big Bay beach Fiordland New Zealand about 1 month ago. It was approx 4 meters long and was a rusted red colour. I'm not sure if this was its natural colour or the result of decomposition. It did have a boney lower tongue ? with no teeth that I could see.

Considering the size of the ocean in general, this doesn't surprise me. Really cool whale though.

Its crazy because this is a mammal and must surface for air so the fact that its never been filmed alive is insane to me

and we recently found a beaked whale graveyard with fossils of new species.

It looks like a basilusaurus

Fascinating creature, my first time hearing of this whole group of whales. They are of the dolphin subgroup of the toothed whale if I understand correctly.

Worth noting that Otago is truly a cetacean hotspot, and it is the only known hotspot for Shepherd's Beaked Whales in the world.

Isn't Longman's beaked whale (Mesoplodon pacificus) just as rare, if not more so? In a book from 1984 I have, it says that the species was known only from two skulls. Have more of that species been found since then?

I agree.
Why does nobody talk about this whale?
More people should talk about this whale.

Why is this creature considered a whale not a dolphin/porpoise?

@fartinthewind933 22 hours ago (edited)

6:31 sounds like it got hit by a boat or something.

@shadowblade8717 14 hours ago

if i ever see one i would mistake it for a dolphin

Well, people likely don’t talk about what they have never even heard of. Lol. Much less an animal species, as most people are ignorant about zoology. Much less a deep-diving, breath-holding, open-ocean dwelling cetacean. I’d say that’s why no one talks about them.
