Biologists Just Found Out What Thylacines in Tasmania Actually Are, and it isn't a wolf. A new study of 225 skulls shows the Tasmanian tiger's jaw matches no living mammal. Its closest working match is a crocodile.

For a century it was branded one of the most dangerous animals in Australia, a sheep killer behind wild animal attacks on livestock. The bones say otherwise: a 17 kg ambush predator that took bandicoots with one lightning-fast snap. Feral dogs, an invasive species, may have done much of the damage it was blamed for.

Inside:
the staged 1921 photo that built the myth
the 1933 zoo footage, a rare thylacine caught on camera
why it may have survived decades past 1936
the de-extinction plan and its wolf-costume problem
