It was a remarkable day filled with chortles, a new chortle from Kaydee to Shadow in the morning when he touched her stick, nest visit for both Shadow & Kaydee in morning & evening, & Kaydee gently allopreens Shadow before they fly off and retire to the Roost tree.
Shadow & Kaydee's togetherness continues to grow & blossom! They are spending the night together & waking up together every day now, Nest visits are almost a daily fixture but now Shadow is joining Kaydee on the nest too. It seems that Kaydee's love language is physical touch - she wants to touch Shadow all the time & tonight she reached out to gently allopreen his head feathers.
Preening and allopreening are grooming behaviors seen in birds. Both behaviors involve using the beak to tend to feathers, but there are some key differences between preening and allopreening.
Preening refers to a bird grooming its own feathers. It is an important part of a bird’s daily routine & helps align feathers, distribute protective oils, and remove dirt or parasites. Most birds spend a significant amount of time preening each day. It is an instinctive solitary activity.
Allopreening refers to grooming between two birds. One bird will gently preen the head, neck, or body feathers of another bird. Mated pairs frequently allopreen, but the behavior also occurs between parents and offspring or even within larger social groups. Allopreening strengthens social bonds and may signal dominance. It is not an instinctive or solitary activity like preening.
For Kaydee & Shadow the most important part of allopreening is it can indicate courtship or mating. ♥ We all know Kaydee is feeling something for Shadow & Shadow did not pull away either. It will be exciting to see this new relationship progress to the next level ♥ Enjoy some of the timestamps I included for the video!
