Karen was 21 and Richard 24 when this was in concert in London!

I saw them live in concert in July, 1972. I absolutely LOVE their music and STILL listen to them. I remember the day she died,...such a HUGE tragedy. She was a badass drummer as well. She had a four octave range and perfect pitch.

The song was written for a bank commercial on tv and Richard heard it with Paul Williams singing it. He contacted him to get the rights for it and the rest was history

Karen and Richard were such nice people. Both so musically gifted. “Close To You” was the song that catapulted them into super stardom. Between touring, travel, recording, tv specials it was especially hard on the both of them. They were only 20 and 23 when they became instantly famous

I’m so glad you both are doing a deep dive into the Carpenters. They have so many beautiful
songs on their albums that are famous songs and other songs you’d absolutely love.

Thank you both for your reactions.

So much pop music from the later 1960s and the 1970s from so many bands used instruments that you often hear from the Jazz genre or from a classical, symphonic orchestra.

She still did drumming throughout her career but she wanted to drum all of the time from what I understood. She considered herself a drummer 1st or a drummer who can sing.

Her mother was a witch and tore her down often visibly preferring Richard. Her security was those drums .. then they took that away from her. She didn't have to leave us .. but the circumstances behind her loss is what's left.
