Lol so many memories, I saved all my money, and in 1972 as a 12 yo, brought a blockey the boat builder kit for a mirror sailing dingy, my father, brother and myself built my mirror in 3 weeks, I sailed it all over Port Phillip Bay, longest trip was safety Beach to Portsea, via Dromana, Rosebud, Rye and return, with my mate we were gone for 10 hours  best day ever,

I really like the simplicity of this kind of sailing. Being able to transport, rig and launch a little dinghy on your own opens up so many possibilities for spontaneous trips. And there’s something especially nice about getting out on the water early in the morning, before the day really begins.

Thank you for your video.  As a teenager I built and sailed a Mirror dinghy.  This reminded me of what fun it was!

Thoroughly enjoyed this.  I learned to sail in a Mirror my Dad built from a kit and went on to race and sail many wonderful craft.  Ended up "sailing" a Royal Navy Destroyer for a while!

I just bought a Mirror as a second dinghy for some solo sailing, along with family being able to learn to sail. I’ve never rigged a gaff before and there are very few good videos showing the complete process. Your introduction was very helpful. The Mirror dinghy is the same size as Matthew Flinders ' Tom Thumb which he sailed from Sydney to Wollongong with George Bass and a 14 year old boy abosrd and returned safely

You made check weights. I own a series 1 GP14, and the way you simply lifted the mirror of the trailer had me running off to check the specs of the two boats. At only a meter shorter in length, I was surprised to see it was a third the weight of my boat. I may have to look closer the next time a mirror comes up for sale near me. Yours is an inspiration.

A wonderful video, taking me back to the late 60s when I built a Mirror dinghy with my dear Dad.
Costing £75 for the kit, including the sails. Paint and varnish extra.
Raced her for a few years at the local yacht club and many happy hours sailing in her.
Mine was number 29226 and we added a spinnaker for the racing later.
Such a versatile boat and still hanker after another at the age of 68.
Wishing as many happy hours with her as I had.

You may try tacking by facing toward the rudder. The advantages are 1. can pass the tiller from one had to the other in font of you instead of behind you, 2. you don't have to go on your knees to turn around instead you just slide you rear across the dagger board support, and 3. Its faster and you are less likely to loose your balance.   Nice video! Thanks for making it!

We had mirror dinghies at our school sailing centre, Welton Water, back in the 1970's. Seem to remember the Daily Mirror promoted them and provided the plans to build it yourself.
