Last Thursday, June 8th, we had the pleasure of hosting Mr. Antonio Piñero, Spanish philologist, historian, academic, and writer, specializing in the life of Jesus of Nazareth, at our Verín Library.
Synopsis: To date, there is no purely historical edition of the New Testament, produced according to strictly academic, non-denominational criteria, without any prior religious bias. A correct understanding of texts written almost two millennia ago requires explanatory work based on literary and historical knowledge, not just theology. Viewing the books of the New Testament with fresh eyes, after the same critical treatment given to any other text from Greco-Roman antiquity, often reveals a different and perhaps even more interesting perspective.
The authors attempt to answer questions frequently raised in the media: What is historical truth in the Gospels? What is fiction? Did the early Church add much of its own to the tradition about Jesus of Nazareth, thus distorting it? What do historians and commentators from the diverse Christian denominations think about this?
