Drummer's first time reacting to Wings for Marie (Pt. 1) and 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2) for the very first time.

I quickly realized these aren't just two songs—they're one emotional journey. As a drummer, I was captivated by Danny Carey's incredible dynamics and the way the music builds around Maynard's heartfelt tribute. By the end, I completely understood why TOOL fans consider this one of the band's most powerful and emotional pieces.

If you've heard these songs before, I'd love to know:

What do they mean to you?
Where do they rank among your favorite TOOL songs?

~~----------------LYRICS----------------~~
You believed.
You believed in movements none could see.
You believed in me.

A passionate spirit,
Uncompromised.
Boundless and open.
A light in your eyes, then, immobilized.

Vacant, broken.
Fell at the hands of those movements that I wouldn't see.
Cause it was you who prayed for me so,
What have I done to be a son to an angel?
What have I done to be worthy?

Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence.
Difficult to see you in this light.
Please forgive this selfish question, but...
What am I to say to all these ghouls tonight?

She never told a lie.
Well might've told a lie,
But never lived one.
Didn't have a life.
Didn't have a life.
But surely saved one.

See? I'm alright.
Now it's time for us to let you go.
----------------------------------------------------------
We listen to the tales and romanticize,
How we'd follow the path of the hero.
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun.
How we rise to the height of our halo.

Listen to the tales as we all rationalize
Our way into the arms of the savior,
Feigning all the trials and the tribulations;
None of us have actually been there,
Not like you...

Ignorant siblings in the congregation
Gather around spewing sympathy,
Spare me.
None of them can even hold a candle up to you.
Blinded by choice, these hypocrites won't see.

But enough about the collective Judas.
Who could deny you were the one who illuminated your little piece of the divine?

And this little light of mine, a gift you passed on to me;
I'm gonna let it shine to guide you safely on your way,
Your way home ...

Oh, what are they going to do when the lights go down,
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they going to do when the rivers overrun,
Other than tremble incessantly?

High is the way, but our eyes are upon the ground.
You were the light and the way they'll only read about.
I only pray Heaven knows when to lift you out.
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough;
You're going home.

You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
Shake your fists at the gates saying:
"I have come home now!
Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father.
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
It's time now!
My time now!
Give me my, give me my wings!"

Give me my...

Give me my...

Give me my!
Give me my!
Give me my!
Give me my!
Give me my!
Give me my wings!

You are the light and way that they will only read about.

Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance,
Burden of proof tossed upon the believers.
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence,
Judith Marie, unconditional one.

Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescents.
Difficult to see you in this light.
Please forgive this bold suggestion, but,
Should you see your Maker's face tonight,
Look Him in the eye, look Him in the eye, and tell Him:
"I never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one.
Hallelujah, it's time for you to bring me home.

One of the greatest, most emotional songs ever written. One cannot listen to this without grieving. Adam's "crying" guitar riffs are just off chain amaze.

Justin's bass work on these pieces must not go overlooked

I cannot listen to this without ungly crying. RIP my mum.

One of the greatest songs ever written, it tears me up everytime having watched my mom have a stroke and loose half her functions for life. You can really feel all his emotions here. Great review as always 🌀 out

These songs are so special. The instruments create this feeling of mourning and when they all come together near the end it really feels like all the emotions one feels while grieving; anger, sadness, bargaining, come crashing down together.
And Maynard’s lyrics are just so honest.
I really enjoyed this reaction, thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Listening to this song; I hold it down remarkably well until he shouts out, " Bring me my wings." I quietly lose it after that.

@Chapterhouse86 3 months ago

Makes me cry every time. So emotional. So powerful.

I don’t think there are too many bands that put so much effort on the composition and details. In a way, it’s almost symphonic or operatic. They’re absolutly brilliant that way!
Great reaction! Respectfull and insightfull 👌

We are all fighting our own battles. Some are fighting along side of others who can't fight alone. Be strong. Be kind. Share something good with someone else. Try to make at least one person smile everyday...they'll remember you for it.

I always felt Wings is Maynard before she died looking at her withered away and processing losing her soon. At the end she does and 10,000 days transitions into his anger and sadness in losing her and her church friends giving him smiley glad hands he knows are fake.

Yeah, that vocal effect on the 'Fetch me the spirit' part is insane. Gets me every time. I'll never forget seeing this live. Tons of fog put out with green lasers shining overhead making a 'light roof' over the crowd. I think i may have cried a little. haha. They will never play it again i bet, but maybe!

when the bass kicks in 16:40, that might be my favorite moment in any Tool song 🤌

Maynard bares himself, so beautiful❤

My grandpa fought Lewy Body Dementia for 7 years…not quite the 27 years MJK’s mom dealt with her issue…but when he passed, I drove to meet my family and when my phone connected and started playing, it was these two songs…the “give me my wiiiiiiiings” part will always get to me.

Wings for Marie is one of my favs 😍 no matter how many times I hear it I get goosebumps then with 10,000 days is just ugh so good. I also hope you feel better soon:)

The word masterpiece just doesn't seem strong enough. The collective talent and creativity of these 4 musicians is just a quantum level above everyone else. But what may characterize Tool more than anything else is the extent to which every instrument in the band (Maynard's voice is definitely an instrument in this band) is so constantly focused on what the other instruments are doing. No band does this like Tool does.
