After more than 6 years of sleeping in a ground tent, I finally tried a rooftop tent for the first time.

I've spent years camping the traditional way: finding a campsite, setting up a ground tent, organizing my gear and settling in for the night. So climbing onto the roof of my 4x4 and turning it into a bedroom was a completely new experience.

This isn't a rooftop tent review or a ground tent vs rooftop tent comparison. It's simply my first time experiencing what it's like to camp in a rooftop tent after years of ground camping.

And I quickly discovered that the experience changes more than just where you sleep.

The fast rooftop tent setup meant more time to relax, cook, explore and actually enjoy the campsite. Without a ground tent taking up valuable space, there was also much more room under the awning to move around, organize gear and live comfortably around the vehicle.

From setting up the rooftop tent for the first time, to spending my first night off the ground, to waking up above the campsite the next morning, this was a completely new chapter in my overlanding journey.
