19:04 I hate that argument of, "Oh I didn't realise how big it was gonna get..." because it implies that plagarism and theft, or any other morally questionable behaviour is just okay so long as the person committing the morally questionable action got only minimal traction from whatever it is that they've put out into the world. The morally questionable action or actions in question, should be deemed not okay, regardless of how many people see it.

I work in publishing (non-fiction) and my job in the past few years has basically turned into “AI-use checker”. We don’t use tools because they’re unreliable and we don’t want to train AI to be better at faking the highly specialist books we publish. It’s really not easy to spot sometimes and even if it’s really obvious, all I can do is ask the author if they used AI, and if they say they didn’t, then I legally have to be careful about making accusations. It’s a minefield for us editors at the moment and as a non-fiction editor, I also have the added stress of knowing I could be publishing misinformation. I have no time for generative AI.

50:16 i saw a tumblr post about AI usage, and there's a phrase in it that I think is relevant here, i dont remember it exactly but it's along the lines of 'you can always tell what parts of the process a person deems unimportant by which parts they're cool with using AI for.'

When my OCD was still undiagnosed there was a several year stint of my life where i couldn't even say or hear the word 'vomit' without having a panic attack because i had such bad emetophobia my brain decided that if I heard/said the word I would get sick.

This feels like it should have WAAAAAY bigger fallout for Hachette, and it is most embarrassing and shameful for them, a BIG FIVE PUBLISHER to be publishing a book that clearly nobody in the office every even read through. Also the idea that the defense "I didn't use AI, I hired an amateur editor who used AI and I just didn't realise because I didn't read the book again" is a good defense — YOU ARE ADMITTING THAT YOU DIDN'T EVEN READ YOUR BOOK ONCE BETWEEN GETTING IT FROM THE EDITOR AND PUBLISHING IT? YOU DIDN'T WANNA BE LIKE "HM WONDER WHAT CHANGED"??? Like, even if this is true, which it blatantly isn't, you're still admitting that YOU DID NOT EVEN READ YOUR OWN BOOK!!!! Oh no, I didn't use AI, I just am a fucking idiot. Like what???? Are you not embarrassed????
