Krispy kreme still makes their doughnuts in house as they always have but I think what you are referring to is how they also distribute their already made doughnuts to places like grocery stores and convenient stores around the country.

We still have 1 Krispy Kreme in Southern California in Orange near Disneyland that makes their donuts on site and you can watch.

Gee, mom was so ahead of the curve on this one! She used to shop the "day old" shop in town and get their glazed donuts (as well as other goods). Then she'd bring them home and fry them with a bit of butter for the 5 kids as a breakfast treat. We LOVED those so much! She was saving money, stretching the budget, and the kids didn't know any better. We just thought it was a special occasion treat.
They were delicious! Who knew, 50 years ago, that they'd become an internet "thing"? grin

I wonder if you could get the desired sugar crunch by torching the glaze like a creme brulee instead of pan frying? It might not squish/dry out the actual doughnut that way

I'd love to see this done like actual tanghulu, with the donut skewered and then dipped in the sugar syrup and allowed to harden into a shell around the whole donut. As a bonus, you could do it with any kind of donut, not just ones that have a glaze that can be melted like this. I bet it would be delicious with my favorite kind of donut, the kind filled with apple jelly and bits of apple and coated with cinnamon sugar.

I like both cake and yeasted donuts. My favorites were always the cake donuts that my mother made in our own kitchen -- the classic batter flavored with just a hint of cloves. With the plain cake donuts we'd buy from the pick-your-own-apples orchard down the road from us, the best way to have them was to split them like you would a bagel, toast them, and slather the cut sides with butter, and eat them warm.
