Of note, and this is old school aquarium engineering knowledge, the tidal has the adjustment for flow AFTER the pump. This is for a reason. You want no restriction on the input and only to "limit" the flow on the output side. This reduces issues and damage to the pump (i.e. overheating, friction, burnout)

That's wild that the dirty filter didn't slow down the flow too much. I'm glad because I let my canisters run a long time between cleanings. Also, I'm glad pre-filters sponges don't slow down flow since having them on the intakes help me go for longer periods between cleanings. Great rabbit hole to go down Cory. And we can also talk about head pressure. The published GPH on these canisters need to add, "results my vary!" Thanks!

Getting rid of the 90* elbows and switch to sweep 90s will also increase the velocity of the water flow. 90* elbows create turbulence points reducing the flow. The higher the volume the pump puts out, the more a 90* elbow will affect the flow. On a smaller canister like the Fx 2, I wouldn't bother getting rid of 90* elbows.

Glad you mentioned the 90-degree elbow at the end. A 30 GPH improvement from swapping that is pretty big.
I'm planning on adding a DIY PVC inline heater to my Fluval 207, so I'll see what sort of improvements I can make. Haven't been a fan of the stock hoses, so that's a good place to start.

I believe Fluval measures the output of the pump alone, not hooked up to anything.

The canister filters often send you soft tubing for your connections. The problem is it's SOFT tubing. So it's own weight causes it to buckle and collapse. Thus restricting flow. I wanna put together some PvC pipes to carry the water and then use a much smaller soft tubing to fiinish the connection.

Thank you for doing this analysis. Big take away I got was the intake hose diameter increase. If a scientist could generate an analysis of the ratio of minimum and maximum rate beneficial bacteria converts the nitrogen cycle we could understand how much flow we need. I love making our filters have more flow which helps our mechanical filtration. But what I love most Is how can we use the least amount of power to achieve the most flow and the nitrogen cycle to keep our fish happy. Dc powered motors are a great direction to go.
