Today weāre going back to a 2013 Mormon Channel interview where Sheri Dew sat down with Dallin H. Oaks and his wife, Kristen Oaks. And I just love it when apostles speak off the cuff because they say some of the best and most telling things.
Weāre talking about Mormon agency, Oaksā āwork first, play neverā personality, womenās education and careers, priesthood authority, marriage, revelation, and what happens when an apostle believes his own words came directly from God.
Oaks also explains why he sometimes wants assurances that people in smaller Church meetings wonāt share what he says publicly, and admits that knowing his words could reach the world actually changes what he is willing to say. That one left me with A LOT of questions.
Then thereās his explanation of telling young women that dressing immodestly could cause them to ābecome adult materialā to men. Oaks doesnāt just defend the statement. He describes the wording as āpure inspirationā and says, āAs a man, Iāve experienced it.ā
Weāll also hear about Kristen Oaksā approach to marriage, women being necessary to move the Church forward while still being excluded from final institutional authority, āgospel cultureā replacing parts of national cultures, nighttime revelation, and what exactly it means when an apostle says he is speaking for the Lord.
Because members are expected to take prophets, seers, and revelators seriously. But when teachings later become uncomfortable, outdated, or wrong, there is always the possibility that they were simply āspeaking as a man.ā
So how exactly were members supposed to know the difference in the first place?

Journalists need to quiz them and dissect them like this interviewer does. :.
