As we age, the clock speeds up.  Dramatically.  In my 60s now, days clip by quickly, a month feels like a week used to, and a season feels like a month, a year like a season.  When we were 15, our entire memories only spanned a little more than 10 years.  I now have several decades of memories, which compresses my perception of the passage of time.  It is a remarkable phenomenon

As a physicist who has done both cosmology and particle physics research, I have simultaneously gotten used to the unimaginably large and unimaginably short time scales. In accelerator physics, we are now finding ways to produce pulses of light on the attosecond scale. For context: an attosecond is to a second what a second is to the age of the universe. On the cosmology side, I have worked on large scale structure formation like modeling galaxy superclusters containing over 100,000 galaxies. These are timescales and distances that are impossible for the human brain to truly appreciate. However, sometimes great artistic visualizations and story telling can help us emotionally digest what our brains were never meant to be able to comprehend... Beautiful

When my husband and I exchanged vows, one of the things we said was that when life gets to feel too much, we'll always be there to remind the other that we're just a marble floating in space, just a spec of time, just a grain of sand. It may sound strange but that reminder has always calmed me, always reminded me to come back to the present moment and live in what matters: love, family, nature. We can't control all the humans in the world. We can't make others live as we wish they would. But we can be the good, share the good, build the good, live the good -- even if just for a blink of time.

I’m a grandma now and my kids are 28 to 36, but when they were about 5 to 13 I translated the time of earth (~4.5 billion years) to a mile, measured my stride and walked it marking events with chalk. Later I took them on that walk and had them watch for those markings. I think it changed all of us because they still talk about it. I come to the same conclusion as the creator that with the blip we are; not that we are meaningless, but that the amazing experience of sentience and our moment of it is so incredibly precious. Also, I’ve been feeling dark at this exact moment of U.S. history (I’m American), and having some personal stressors that have been heavy the last few years. Watching this, not only does this moment of life feel so precious, but I remember the experience I gave my kids in doing this and other things in raising them and I feel less helpless and a tiny bit more capable and able. I doubt this will be read with 3.5 thousand comment, but I’m putting this thank you out there. I’m a grandma. I’m a therapist who works with people without a lot of power in our society. I’m a worrier. This morning I felt without strength or motivation and now I don’t. Thank you so much.

What I think is even crazier than the time aspect of how short our life is, is the fact that we are conscious enough to be aware of how little time we have. We are the only species known to not only have the will to survive, but the will to want to understand the nature of our being as well.

i am 70 now.. i have spent my life deeply  studying the cosmos, now,,, my health is failing, but.. i will NEVER EVER stop reaching , reaching up high into the sky.... many people mentally walk around with their hands slumped by their sides.   they are zombies... i have travelled all over our planet . i have experienced a whole bunch of the over whelming beauty of our home, but i shall never stop... my time is now quite short .  But this 70 year old is reaching high.. PRECISELY because of the message this video delivers...  GET YOUR HANDS UP AND REACH, reach  high  BECAUSE TIME.. IS SHORT !
