Which painting should we investigate next?

Despite the changes of time, the girl in the painting remains haunting and captivating.

AI purple prose script is agonising.

To recreate the background with replacement pigments would not give you back the original painting.

Never understood the fascination with the Mona Lisa. I fell in love with the girl the moment I saw her and I love the fact that she gets better. The science connection of discovery of a new world in looking closer and closer is phenomenal.

My thought is clean the dirt off the top layers of varnish then stop. Return some of the detail and clarity but leave the paint untouched. Use the scan data to create a copy showing the painting as it was originally. Time took Vermeer's original and transformed it into something amazing in its own right.

This is the sad part of life. Nothing is forever.

Just got the idea to repaint it on my own

The world has an absolute and indisputable right to experience the aging of artistic masterpieces exactly as they have aged over time.
Fortunately, this can now be digitally reconstructed for posterity with the help of scanners and computers, allowing future generations to witness their entire history of aging and expression changes.

I am all for restoration if it can be done without damaging the original.  I am fascinated at the discovery of the originals.

It's ridiculous to suggest that anything other than the artist's intention is acceptable, clean it and restore it, there is only one original, Vermeer's.

What a powerful revelation.  I have no answers, but I am fascinated by the discussion.

Andrew Graham Dixon's recent book about Vermeer suggests this is an actual portrait, not a tronie, and even suggests who this is.

It’s interesting to see what was found in the painting underneath the layers.
I am of the opinion that whether or not the painting is restored, it is the SAME painting. For me, it’s akin to learning more about something that you never knew before. It’s the same something, you can just see more aspects of it.
I  think decisions need to be made based on what will make the painting most stable for the future. She’s a precious charming gift and we should be treating her with focus on what will keep her stable rather than what will reveal or conceal (to the naked eye only) the original details. That’s how you respect both options. Also, green curtains and slightly more eyelash isn’t going to even show up when put on a T-shirt, side of a bus or even most printings in books. She is not fundamentally changed in terms of appeal with the findings of this research. She’s still what and who she has always been. Some other paintings show fundamental differences when studied; this information does not rise to that level.
I do think this channel is very overdramatic and I’m not a fan. Despite learning something here, I don’t think the overall presentation is credible enough to warrant watching anything else from this channel. Definitely purple prose, the music is abysmally dramatic. AI goo. It’s all much too fussy.

Thank you for this. I love Vermeer and I am teaching my grandchildren about art and this is one of the painting I just explained to them, but knowing  this I have more to tell them.
