In this video, you will see multiple international emergency services and fire department vehicles from Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and Luxembourg driving through the affected area under emergency status.
From the air, support is provided by two Swedish firefighting aircraft, along with footage of Dutch Chinook helicopters from the Defense Helicopter Command equipped with large Bambi Buckets with a capacity of up to 7,600 liters of water per drop.
Additionally, the video highlights local solidarity, showing farmers continuously driving back and forth with their agricultural vehicles and slurry tankers to transport water to the front lines. There are clear images of the massive smoke development above the region, captured in the affected area in Belgium around Eupen, Jalhay, Malmedy, and Waimes, as well as on the German border side near Kalterherberg and Monschau.
The Wildfire in the High Fens: In the cross-border nature reserve the High Fens, one of the largest and most destructive wildfires in Belgian history broke out. Due to extreme drought and treacherous winds, the fire spread rapidly across thousands of hectares of vulnerable heathland and raised bog.
Due to the immense scale of the fire, Belgium requested international assistance through the European Civil Protection Mechanism. Within a very short time, a unique cross-border operation was set up. Fire brigades and emergency services from Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and Luxembourg worked shoulder to shoulder on the ground. Sweden deployed two firefighting aircraft to conduct targeted aerial water drops, while the Netherlands sent heavy military helicopters.
The fire was not limited to a single municipality or country. The fire and dense smoke affected a vast area in the Belgian Ardennes around Eupen, Jalhay, Malmedy, and Waimes, but also crossed the border into the Eifel in Germany near Kalterherberg and Monschau, where residents were also evacuated.
⚠️ All footage in this video was taken from a safe distance and with the utmost respect for the large-scale operation underway to get the fire under control. 112 Zeeland expresses its deep respect to everyone who, in any way, contributed to fighting this massive wildfire.
