Newport’s summer palaces still rise above the Atlantic, where mansions like The Breakers and Marble House preserve the extraordinary wealth of America’s Gilded Age. In 1883, William Kissam Vanderbilt completed Marble House, helping transform Bellevue Avenue into a showcase for America’s newest fortunes.
But the world behind those iron gates was becoming too expensive and too old-fashioned to survive. Rising taxes, inheritance costs, changing social customs, World War I, and the Great Depression pushed wealthy families away, while some mansions faced demolition.
Today, Newport’s great mansions survive as museums — monuments to a vanished social world and the fortunes that built it.
