Saratoga Springs became one of America’s richest resorts, where mineral springs, grand hotels, horse racing, and wealthy summer crowds transformed a small New York settlement into a national playground. In 1803, Gideon Putnam purchased land around Congress Spring and helped build the resort that would later attract America’s elite by railroad.
But success created its own weakness. Progressive Era reforms attacked gambling, New York moved against racing in 1907, and changing medicine, transportation, and travel habits weakened the resort economy.
Today, the springs, Victorian architecture, Congress Park, and Saratoga Race Course preserve fragments of the extraordinary world that once made Saratoga famous.
