Homeschooling? Educating your kids at home? 😱 What about socialization? What about friends? How do they learn? Is it more expensive? And how do you avoid going crazy? 😂
In this episode of Moms on Pause, we talk with Consuelo de la Peña (Coni), mother of two and creator of @maximilianoymamá, about a decision she never imagined making: taking her son out of traditional school and starting homeschooling in Mexico.
Coni tells us what happened during the months her son was in kindergarten, the signs that made her and her husband question whether that educational model was right for him, and how they faced the fear, doubts, and even comments from close friends and family when they decided to homeschool him.
But we also talk about what almost all of us want to know when we hear the word HOMESCHOOL:
✨ What is a typical day of homeschooling really like?
✨ How many hours do they study?
✨ How does a child who doesn't go to school socialize?
✨ Are there subjects, books, grades, and report cards?
✨ How do mom and work balance?
✨ Is it cheaper than a private school?
✨ What about sports, English, and extracurricular activities?
✨ Can they return to a traditional school later?
✨ And what about mom's exhaustion?
A conversation that doesn't try to convince you that one educational model is better than another. Because something Coni makes very clear is that homeschooling isn't for all children or all families.
And perhaps the most important reflection of the episode isn't about whether or not to take our children out of school, but about learning to observe them: understanding their interests, recognizing their strengths, and supporting their education, whatever model we choose.
