Thank you Colin, this is really useful for me. I'm never sure how much referencing should be done as it seems I could fiddle with a mix forever and never be happy. The hardest thing for me is knowing when it's done, or really, when to say "OK, enough".

What I've noticed is that for most of my tracks, there actually is a universally "good" mix. The changes you make necessary for other devices (If you do it right) don't take away from your original mix that sounded good on your headphones. But they sound much better on those other devices.

You’ve been a big help since watching your vids.

I'm learning a lot from your videos. Thanks  a lot ❤

Colin, i saw tons of your videos, hints, tips and tricks. Using so much of what I learned from you. Now this was this was what I was waiting for, and what I always was unsure about. Thank you so much.

am 15 years old and am learning music mixing so i can become a freelancer

I agree. It's really important to know your gear.

Enjoy the season! Hope to begin our journey in January :) Best to you and your family

Learning your speakers/ headphones is absolutely key. My monitor speakers are great, but a bit bottom end heavy, so I went through a phase of mixing the bass end way down on tracks, but then on other systems the mixes were really tinny. So now I know that yes, it may feel a bit too bottom end heavy on my monitor speaker, but actually it's fine across everything else.

Speaking the truth here!

My experience with rather flat headphones is that I just push the bass way too much, so it sounds way too loud on bass-boosted headphones / bluetooth speakers

Fantastic videos thank you,

Have the same cans based on an earlier recommendation from you Colin.  I use Sonarworks sound ID software.  It offers similar functionality dialled in specifically for our cans and many others.  For flat response you can adjust wet dry.  I go about 70% flat as I found I had been mixing too bright. Cost approx $200 nz back in the day.

I totally agree with you.

So the Arc system seems like a good alternative to the Steven Slate system, with the advantage that you can use your own preferred headphones? I like it.
My question is, what do I do if I get it sounding great in say, my car speakers and a Bluetooth speaker but it sounds crappy elsewhere? Surely, a compromise has to be made somewhere?

So, love your info as always. Clarify for me,  when you hear the “problem areas” outside your DT770’s, (ie car, Bluetooth spkr, monitors, phone) are you shooting for adjusting to a happy medium back on your Dt770’s remembering from your notes the things that sounded wonky?
Thx.

Hey Colin,  I keep getting emails from you and I get a message asking me to "please enter a valid email" when I try to unsubscribe. The email I am entering is the one you are sending stuff to.

i use the slate vsx headphone system for mixing - very useful indeed and produces great consistent results. also incredibly good value for money given that it gives you access to many many thousands' worth of speakers and treated rooms

thanks for this video. I've watched almost every Band Guide video so far and learned a lot. Just to simplify: Should we get to the point where all other "devices" (TV, smartphone, Yamaha, etc.) on the DT 770 sound approximately the same as on the DT 770?

I find isotope Tonal Balance control an absolute godsend for getting a balance across the frequencies. It’s a simple guide that helps you spot issues before you go too far. I’ve found, since using it, that my finished mixes are far more consistent. I only mix my own music but I’ve found I’m much happier with my finished product.
Also, what is that song you played at the end, cause you’re putting your money where your mouth is there. I’m watching on my iPad and it sounds great! I’d love to hear the whole song.
