Extreme skinny and extreme obesity should not be celebrated. The fashion industry has always celebrated underweight and underdeveloped, which has done horrors for my confidence growing up as a girl in America. Now they're also celebrating the other end of the spectrum weight by displaying people with severe obesity. As a mid-size model I gave up on the industry because normal people are not celebrated. Just disgusting extremes that we all know are not healthy!!

I appreciate that Amala acknowledges that gluttony is one of the only “deadly sins” that everyone can see and judge you for. If you struggle with porn or a bad temper people don’t know it with a single glance in your direction.

When I hit my mid-30s, my metabolism slowed down and I could tell I was gaining weight because I didn't need a belt for my pants anymore. Then I made a simple workout routine and hit the gym once a week, and eventually I needed the belt again. Sometimes you don't need to go all out to be healthy.

Obviously smoking abd morbid obesity are terrible for anyone's health. A few years back when I was a smoker, I had a group of morbidly obese women, I'm talking in the 400lbs arena start sh*t talking me for smoking... I pointed out that obesity was also unhealthy.  Literally said it in general terms not directed to anyone and thought they were going to beat me up. The hypocrisy and cognitive dissonance was astounding!

I have PCOS. I became morbidly obese due to my dietary choices and lack of excersize. I became so sick and the excess fat only exasperated my PCOS. I opted for WLS to help me. The day of my surgery, I had a stroke at the age of 38. I am alive by God's grace. After, despite being in physical therapy for months, and not being cleared for exercising; I focused on my diet and the walking I was allowed to do. I lost 100 lbs and reversed all my medical conditions. My PCOS is controlled. My diabetes is in remission. I made a full recovery from my stroke. Weight loss allowed all of this. Weight loss saved my life. A choice I made saved my life.

I really wish they would have done fat vs. fit not skinny, fit people would have such a different outcome than this did. Love your take!

As a Truck Driver over the road I blew up to 230 pounds.    I now weight 160 pounds.  How did I do it, you ask?   I started my research and found that "mans" food is what is killing us all slowly.  Once I started eating "Real" food, I lost the weight fast.  No gym work, just same old trucker.  Eat Real Meat and stay away from all the junk!  Keep Carbs to 60grams or less, via a good salad, with spinach and not the crap lettuce...   HOOAH!!!

I was underweight for sooo many ycoears. I felt weak, but in my mind, i looked perfect. Now that i have an healthy BMI, jesus, i feel soo much better! There are still some days when i feel fat and ugly cause now i have a more feminin body. Our brains and socitey can f.. us up so bad.. Both, too skinny or too fat is not healthy and shoud not be praised.

It’s sad to see some people in this video being out of breath just from talking and participating in this shoot, yet still defending obesity 😢

One thing my husband tells me often that I appreciate is “you’re beautiful in my eyes no matter what, but if you want to lose 5, 10, 20 lbs to help you feel healthier than I will help you and support you.” My weight isn’t what makes me beautiful, but it does effect my life with him and our children. You can learn to love yourself as you are right now while still working towards a goal that you want to be

I remember articles during covid where it would say something like "Healthy 25-year-old dies of COVID" or "Young woman with no health issues dies of covid" and then you look at the picture of them and they're not just fat they're massively obese. It was ridiculous that people couldn't speak plainly about it. I definitely think willpower plays a major part but also the culture you're in can make it more difficult. I moved to Japan for a year with people from different countries and all the overweight people lost weight in that year without trying as they have a much better attitude to food in Japan. I'd go to takeaway places and a portion for one person was much smaller than it would be in the US and Europe.

I was a volunteer EMT for a bunch of years. It was most common for me to take care of obese people, usually for diabetes. The thing was, almost all of them (I can’t remember an exception) were under the age of 70. Once my patients got over that age, they were all thin. Once above the age of 70, morbidly obese people had either found a way to lose significant weight or had passed away. You can’t tell me that obesity is healthy in the long run.

Feeling “entitled” to eat junk food is wild to me

I will say that losing weight as a woman can be extremely difficult. Especially after having children. Hormones while breastfeeding, as well as from losing sleep, can make you feel like a bottomless pit and exhausted. It takes extreme discipline, and even then, sometimes your body simply wants to hold onto the weight while breastfeeding. That said, it is still a choice to take responsibility and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The thing about being big is that even if you barely eat, you can still be big for a quite a while. It takes time for the body to use the fat as energy.
On top of that... when you've been big for a while, you can still see yourself that way even if you're not anymore (body dysmorphia).

I have lupus and changing my diet to mostly whole foods and limiting processed/fast food has changed my life! You have to make the conscious choice that “my body is already attacking itself, let’s not make it worse”. I also stay active (walk every day and do yoga), even when it’s not easy.

Appearance is such a difficult topic because we make snap judgements just based on how people look. Larger people will generally be assumed to make poor diet or lifestyle choices. However, my best guy friend is one of the most disciplined people I know about his diet and exercise, but he still presents as large and carries fat naturally. You might not think that based on looking at him, and I think that’s where the body positivity movement had something right, but then it swung too far, as most things do, and it no longer became about not making those snap judgements and more about condoning the unhealthy choices.

I had my son in June of 2021. It was a pain in the ASS to get that baby pudge and extra weight off but I did, I’m back at my pre-pregnancy weight of 127lbs (I’m a smaller person) and I feel 10x better. I was going to use the “I had a baby” excuse but it was too easy and I wanted to challenge myself. I kept my clothes from before I was pregnant and told myself I’d fit back into it if I kept working hard. I refused to buy bigger clothes, I cleaned up my diet and started exercising more regularly and I love how I look and feel.

I understand how that girl saying she should be able to eat junk food once in a while like skinny people feels. Unfortunately, life doesn’t work like that. I’m sure people allergic to peanuts wish they could eat peanut butter. We all have our own struggles. Bodies are all different. We can’t all eat/do the same things. Better to learn how to live with it because complaining won’t change anything.

As an adolescent, overweight and obese friends of mine would comment on my healthy eating or exercising when I ventured to do so. It would always hurt my feelings honestly. I was supposed to die as an infant. I've always been skinny for most of my life. I've had two heart surgeries and was afraid of allowing my health to fall so low that I'd never make it to my 20's or 30's. They'd always comment, "You don't need to diet, you're so pretty already!" ... I never ate healthy or exercised to 'look pretty' or be skinny, it was for my own health. Growing up in a family where my immediate family alone covers PAGES of medical issues, it hit me a little harder than most people. My father has always ranged around 100 pounds my entire life (i.e., morbidly underweight), with Crohn's and crippling Post Polio syndrome and severe health issues. Comments made to those of us who are skinny could make a real negative impact. Never assume.
