LoL dude I stress this to new FPV heads all the time, I don’t think people who are just starting out realize how much good lipo safety really matters in the hobby.
Storytime: One day not too many years ago my homie and I had just gotten back from ripping and were hanging out in his moms bedroom (he had just moved her into his place and his station was still set up in there) and while I was scrolling on my phone he was going over his footage from the day on his computer.
He was charging all his spent packs up, parallel, and he had a tendency to overcharge by at least by about .30 volts per cell just for a bit of extra kick. Splendid idea as any RC head knows well enough.
Well turns out one of his packs in the line had a corrupted cell, which he was aware of but didn’t pay it enough mind to because reasons. Sure as shit tho, just as every RC head fears at one point or another, the room was quiet and we were both too pooped to be chatting much so just sitting there relaxing, and out of nowhere…. BOOOM the whole row of like 7 or 8 Ovonic packs goes up at once in a fantastic shitshow of what I can only describe as a fantastical jet turbine level of hellfire and chemical brimstone, literally like 3 feet from his head. And anyone who’s ever had a lipo go up unexpectedly knows just how unlike a regular fire it actually is. The shit don’t just burn with a simple flicker and flame after it goes boom, no, it literally shoots out like some fucked up ghetto lightsaber built by the crackhead down the block. And the smell too, dayyyyum, it ain’t pretty and if you don’t breathe shallow it will melt your lung tissue into Emil from Robocop, that sickly sweet chemical fume don’t fuck around. Luckily he had his charging station set up on a metal cooking sheet so it was easy enough to transport outside while it was still burning, of course he had to carry it down the hall thru the rest of the house and out the garage, trailing that thick gray cloud of smoke the entire way.
Needless to say, my homie don’t overcharge anymore and we sure as shit don’t parallel charge either, I had already stopped doing that a while ago after I had too many packs go to shit because of one bad lipo in the lineup.
Spent the rest of the evening on the back porch with every window and door in the house wide open while we let the place air out. His mom booked herself a hotel for the night.
I bought a bbq grill to charge them inside. Bbq grills are meant for fires. And I keep it on the back porch so if there’s a fire there will be no smoke damage
You can also use a metal box and stick a large bag of building sand under the lid. If fire happens it melts the bag and sand falls on the fire hopefully retarding it.
I just went the bullet proof option, an ammo box, but its lined with furnace batting, it will withstand the intense heat of combustion. But yes, trim a bit of the seal to let it vent, preferably by the hing area.
I use a steel tool box lined with two layers of 5/8 fire resistant dry wall and one layer to separate the batteries. Trying to come up with something to filter the vent.
I bought mine last week. The number (and capacity) of batteries that can be stored together safely is specified by the manufacturer. My issue, however, is that it’s not really compatible with Traxxas batteries and chargers. So I’ll only be using mine for battery storage. That’s a downside, because at this price point I’d prefer it to also be suitable for charging/discharging batteries — which is when they’re most at risk of something going wrong.
Just got into the RC car hobby after denying myself for 50 years! Started with a beginner hobby grade car (MJX Hyper Go 14303). I've been looking forward to checking your RC content out, and this lipo video is exactly one of the things I've been wanting to review more. I've got a Gens Ace IMARS D300 smart charger and plan on setting myself up with something similar to that bat safe. Looking forward to more, Jeremy!
I have 3 2s lipo batteries that I store in an ammo can. I have removed all the seals except around the front of the lid. Also I have vented holes in the lid.
I got a bat safe as well but just one lol. I only use it for charging since that’s when the fire will happen. The chances of it happening while just sitting on the shelf with a storage charge is very low. Nice video tho brotha, just got me a new Big Rock 6S on the Memorial Day sale and man I love it already 😂
80 > 70% storage charge. You can bring them back. It just the voltage has dropped, too low. I revived them in the past. Only cause batteries are crazy hard to import due to crazy laws in my country. You legally can't import them privately. And hobbies shops don't wanna deal with all the hassle. They have sent by ship in a fireproof container. The shop must have a fireproof bunker to store them outside the shop if they have more than five batteries 😂. When they first came out back in the day. People used to charge them like a nicad in the trunk of their car at the race track. After the third car caught fire, they finally installed a proper charging area. And banned you from charging in or near your car 😂.
I had an RC battery on a balance charger in my garage the other day, in a wooden shelving unit. Had my back to it when I saw the bright reflection of the thing exploding and hurriedly swiped it all off onto the concrete floor, absolutely scared the shit out of me! Luckily well ventilated so no big bang, the worst thing is the black soot covering everything in the vicinity. Thinking of bolting together some baking trays into an open fronted cube just for charging, so at least it'll contain any flames and reduce the mess
Great information thanks. If you have fire, they make a class D fire extinguisher. Class C recommended for electrical fires, but a class D is recommended for metal fires specifically for lithium fires. And get a pair of heavy welding gloves if you want to remove that box out of the area after the fire is out, an oven mitt won't cut it. I don't use the big boy batteries. Safety is having a plan and peace of mind.
I use a good ol osha approved flammable cabinet. Similar concept to the bat safe but it’s a much larger and more affordable ventilated steel cabinet. The only obvious down side is that it isn’t portable. I use large LiPo bags in my truck tool box for transport(I’m a airplane/heli guy).
