James Potter wakes in a cot in the nursery of the Potter family home in Godric's Hollow, and the year is 1960. His hands are small and useless, his legs kick weakly at a wool blanket, and the mind behind his eyes belongs to a twenty-one-year-old man who remembers everything.
Euphemia Potter leans over the crib and lifts him gently into her arms. She is young and healthy and smiling, and Fleamont Potter stands behind her with his chest puffed out and his hand already reaching for the broomstick catalogue on the bedside table. They fuss over their son, and the child they are holding stares up at them with eyes that have already seen war.
James remembers Hogwarts. He remembers Sirius, Remus, Peter, and Lily. He remembers the Order of the Phoenix and the Fidelius Charm and the door of Godric's Hollow blowing open on the night of October 31st, 1981. He remembers the green light in the hallway and his son screaming upstairs.
He knows certain things with absolute clarity. Voldemort killed him. Peter Pettigrew betrayed the family as Secret Keeper. Sirius was innocent. Lily died protecting Harry. A prophecy linked Harry to Voldemort, though James never heard its full words. Dumbledore told them only that Voldemort had marked their son, and then the war swallowed everything.
James spends his first years in the cot sorting through everything he remembers, but every memory ends on October 31st, 1981. He knows Voldemort killed him. Peter betrayed them. Lily screamed, Harry cried, and green light filled the hallway. After that, there is nothing. He doesn't know if Voldemort survived, what became of Sirius, Remus, or Dumbledore, or even how the war ended. He died at twenty-one, and the dead learn nothing.
What he does know is painfully limited. He knows how to fight, who he loved, and who betrayed him. He knows a prophecy existed but never heard its words. He remembers the war he fought, not the one that followed.
He has no roadmap for the future. Just a second chance—and the determination not to waste it.
The first thing he changes is himself.
James Potter, in his first life, was an arrogant bully. The adult mind inside this infant body has nothing to do for years except remember, and the memories are uncomfortable. He remembers hexing Severus Snape in corridors for sport. He remembers hanging Snape upside down by the lake while Lily Evans screamed at him to stop, and the ugly truth is that he enjoyed it. Lily loved him eventually because he grew up, late and under pressure. Snape hated him because James earned that hatred every single day for five years.
He decides, lying in a cot he cannot escape, that the second life will demand something better.
The years of childhood pass slowly for a mind that already knows how to cast a Patronus and is learning, again, how to hold a spoon. James endures infancy with patience he never possessed the first time around. He reads early, speaks early, and surprises his parents with a temperament far calmer than any Potter child has a right to show. They attribute it to good breeding. James keeps his silence and waits for Hogwarts.
September 1st, 1971. King's Cross Station. Platform Nine and Three-Quarters. James boards the Hogwarts Express with a trunk, an owl, and twenty-one years of memories pressing behind his eleven-year-old eyes.
He finds Sirius Black within fifteen minutes. The boy sits alone in a compartment with his arms crossed and his jaw tight, eleven years old and already braced for a fight with anyone who looks at him twice. James slides the door open and drops into the seat across from him.
James(easy, 11): Hi! I’m James Potter. Mind if I sit?
Sirius(flat, 11): Everywhere else is full, is it?
James(grinning): Completely packed. Nowhere else to go.
Sirius(narrowing his eyes): There are six empty compartments in this carriage alone.
James: And yours has the best view.
Sirius stares at him for three full seconds and then laughs, sharp and surprised, and the friendship begins exactly the way it was always going to begin.
