As an American my only problem with metrics is the 10mm socket always goes missing.

In grade school, around 1960, we were told that America would be on the metric system within 10 years. Ten years later, in college, I was taught, for calculations on my slide rule, that the speed of light is 186,000 miles per second. Wave lengths were in cycles per second but measured in feet. I knew we had came a long way.

The first guy in this video is Werner Von Braun, a Nazi scientist who ran Hitler's V2 rocket program. After World War 2, when Germany was divided into east and west, the US brought him and other scientists to America and they were instrumental in the space program.
They tried to teach, and convert to, the metric system back when I was in high school in 1975. It went over like a turd in a punch bowl. Cars in the eighties had speedometers that read in both miles per hour and kilometers per hour. That didn't last long either.

Medicine and the automotive industry are almost entirely run on the metric system here in the States. In medicine, conversions only exist to keep from confusing patients about their weight. Literally everything else is metric.
And there isn't a mechanic in America, professional or otherwise, that hasn't lost half a dozen 10mm sockets.

We went metric in Australia back in '73. I used metric 90% of the time in my job, but , as far as I am concerned , I am still 5 feet 10 inches tall...LOL

"We are smarter than we thought"... The French revolutionaries were absolutely GENIOUS, I think that we dont have people like that anymore. Maybe few excpetions. But people back then could be WISE.

A cube of water 10x10x10cm is one liter, weighing a kilogram, freezing at 0°C and boiling at 100°C. You can WEIGH almost the exact VOLUME of most liquids when cooking and vice versa, thay pretty close to water (oil) or based on that (vinegar,milk,soy sauce etc.). You know for sure that after 0°C, cold weather will become freezing, and your nose snorts will start to frost in icicles. He went into scientific, precise definitions, but he didn't mention the main convenience of the metric system: it's based on water.

You have experience with aviation. And mixing two systems.
Like you I grow up in Europe. And metric system is easy for me. Everyday in use.
But I remember when metric system become standard. SI (sistem Internationale) in middle 1970
I was in elementary school.

While Von Braun headed the Apollo program overall it was Arthur Rudolph who was the project director for the Saturn V. Rudolph was rewarded for his service helping to get America to the Moon by being deported back to Germany in the mid-1980s upon accusations by the "Office of Special Investigations" and Eli Rosenbaum.
The West German government - which usually will happily put anything on trial - couldn't find anything to charge Rudolph with and he became a German citizen again.

Ok. The reason the US hasn't fully converted to metric has nothing to do with how easy it is to calculate, convert, etc. It's because those of us that grew up using only Imperial units understand them intuitively. My view of the world is framed in inches, feet, and miles, and ounces, pounds, and tons. Show me an object and ask me how big it is, and I can estimate by eye with those units. Since I didn't grow up with metric units, I can't do that in metric - I have to convert, which is an extra mental step. Same for weight/mass. I know how heavy 100 lbs is. But it's not intuitive to me that 45.35923 kg is the same amount. So, I don't really want to be forced to use only metric. Of course, continued exposure makes it easier - I do have a better mental "map" of metric units now than I did 40 years ago - but just switching "cold turkey" would still be rather painful. We'll convert eventually, when all of us older folks retire and/or die off.

I have been a machinist for all of my adult life. About 15 years ago I worked for a German own company here in the U.S. that used the metric system so I got used to it. I am one of the few American's I know that knows both pretty well... yes that includes measurements of distance, and temperatures. About 8 years ago I started working for a new company that has all their machines in Imperial Standard, but a lot of our blueprints for Japanese and European customers are in Metric, so I'm the one that ends up doing the conversions for a lot of the guys around the shop. Honestly, I would be fine with converting to ALL metric.

In a lot of jobs in America, we are required to do both metric and imperial measurement systems depending on who sees it and where it goes now this doesn't mean everything in the metric system but close to everything depending on what is being talked about and who you are talking to

I would love to see more of this kind of thing! Fun video! very engaging writing from real engineering... Your expression when he said velocity was hilarious. I can't imagine trying to understand this in a second language at this pace either 😂 And adding the letters actually makes math less difficult, I swear!

Benjamin Franklin tried to get the U.S. govt. to switch to the metric system. Of course, he also wanted to make the turkey the national bird.
If you go into any supermarket in the U.S., all the large containers of soda are in liter and two-liter bottles. Nobody even thinks about this.
