Top 10 Worst Multicolor Cards

Multicolor cards, sometimes called gold cards by the community, are some of the most popular cards in magic. Thanks to being harder to cast, they’re often made more powerful than the average monocolored card. That doesn’t mean they’re all winners, though. There are a ton of multicolor cards that are just unplayable, and today, we’re going over some of the worst cards that cost multiple colors of mana.

Obligatory reminder: creatures are spells. Which is why Illusionary Demon is so bad.

I love how the designers of the old sets must have thought that a card being multicolor is already an upside in itself.

I like how this video was basically "5 bad Visions cards, and 5 other ones".

Imagine using Inkshield against a Jumbo Cactuar

@DreadPirateRobertz 1 year ago

I love it, giving your opponent a One Ring that YOU have to pay for. Fucking insane.

the anti djinn card is pretty good against changeling decks / commanders! very niche still but kinda fun

Deflecting Palm on a Wurmcoil Engine is a Delta of 18 damage

Inkshield is actually pretty damn popular in Commander. Given the big swings you can have coming at you, Inkshield is notorious for how often it can turn a match up around because it can give you a hell of a board state with evasive bodies. There's a reason the card is over $5 a copy.

Suleiman's Legacy also works with changelings

Not only is Growth all downside, but it's not even something you can donate to an opponent and force them to have the downside, because they can just choose not to pay the cumulative upkeep cost! I haven't looking over Every Card In The Game but I 100% agree that it deserves the number one spot on this list.

Cloven Casting should get a dishonorable mention.
5 U R
Enchantment
Whenever you cast a multicolored instant or sorcery spell, you may pay 1 (generic), if you do, copy that spell. You may choose new targets for the copy.
You could just pay 6 U and get a swarm intelligence which does the same thing minus the "multicolored" restriction and "you may pay 1" 👀
OR 4 U R for a Thousand-Year Storm to really give your spells combo potential.

I can kind of understand how we got Malignant Growth, seeing as it's a Mirage-era creation, back when card advantage wasn't quite recognized for its power.

Dragon Appeasement, though? What the hell? This crap on a modern card? Even if you removed the skip-your-draw downside entirely , it would still be overpriced.

A video series idea is going over the Restricted list in Vintage

malignant growth makes you pay unholy amounts of mana just to give your opponent a one ring. Who designed this card???

@CobaltDraco 1 year ago

If only malignant growth dealt damage for ALL cards drawn, rather than just those it provides. Blue does get some cards that make target player draw X cards.

I have to add Sulimens legacy was like a holdover card when they made sets like Arabian Nights, MIRAGE block was actually in development around the time they were making up those sets and Ice Age etc. But it sad in the oven for longer. Which is why it felt like it had way better balance to it then Ice age.

I got Malicious Advice from a bin for a quarter. I played it in my Esper tap everything deck. The real use is to tap lands. You pay X, instant speed, to tap all lands a player controls. Works better in multiplayer. But it jankly won me games.

Reflect Damage is absurdly powerful in multiplayer games, especially before the game's designers went crazy with power creep over the last decade. Many games straight up ended by someone casting Wildfire, Pyroclasm, or similar "deal X damage to all creatures" spell, only to have 20+ damage reflected right back at them. I literally played it in every single WR deck I ever brought to the table, and there was never a moment I regretted it. Instead, I have years of amazing stories of it straight up winning games.

I think you're missing some quirks of Reflect Damage that make it pretty different from the other cards you mentioned. First, it doesn't prevent damage, it changes the recipient of that damage. It gets around damage prevention and targeting effects that way. Second, it doesn't change the source of the damage, which can matter for things like infect. Last, it redirects all of the damage, not just damage to you or one target. Really fun when someone drops a damage sweeper and you put it all back in their face.

Still not an amazing card, but far more than an overcosted Deflecting Palm.

To be fair, Artificial Evolution is a 1 mana blue instant that lets you change the text of a spell by replacing a creature type with another. This can make Suleiman's Legacy very useful.
