Lions eye diamond is the exact definition of this. I remember bulk boxes ( 10 cents a card ) having as many as you could possibly want 😂😂😂 I wish I had my cards from high school ( 93-96 ) I remember having a taiga blown off a concrete slab we were playing on into the cape fear river and thinking ohh well I’ll just put another one in when I get home. And we were playing with no sleeves 😂😂😂😂

Enterprising players unlocking synergies of cards printed years or sometimes decades apart and in doing so coverting piles into format defining monsters will always be the best part of magic.

Gray merchant of what?... oh, you mean Good Ol Gary...

Old cards get find new usage with later complimentary combos. Until a more efficient version is made then it goes back to the basement.

I remember watching PT:RTR shortly after I had started playing Magic, and seeing a notice on screen that the next round would start once Eggs finished going off.

Karn got restricted in Vintage not because of Lattice, or really any other card it can fetch. Rather, it's a one-sided Null Rod: you shut off all of your opponent's Moxen, Lotus, Crypt, etc, while still being able to use your own.

9:14 Pack Rat does not grow exponentially, it grows quadratically - in fact, you can basically imagine a pile of pack rats as a square that has its sides equal to the count and power of pack rats (which are equal)
"growing exponentially" should be reserved for things that multiply every time, like Krenko, Mob Boss

this is my favorite type of video!! i LOVE cards that took time to be considered good

Hey, I recently discovered your channel and I love the vids,
If I had one piece of criticism I think it would be great if you could read out loud what the cards you're talking about do, because me and I imagine a bunch of other people don't know each and every card, and I love these videos to sleep, so I don't want to look at my screen the entire time to pause and read cards,
If you don't care for these criticisms that's also fair if that is not you're target experience
Thanks for helping with my insomnia

Black Vise and Balance held Necropotence back. Once they rotated out of Type II, all hell broke loose.

The first time I saw Mishras bauble, I knew it was cool.

Swords To Plowshares - in the beginning, Magic players cared a lot about gaining life and really hated letting their opponents gain life; instead, sometimes as a joke or janky trick, Swords would be included only to target your own creatures for quick life gain in case you got Fireballed

Wrath Of God - again in the beginning, destroying your own creatures was unthinkable; now mass creature destruction is mandatory in control decks and in Commander

Balance - not only did this have the "impossibly distasteful" draw back of possibly destroying your own creatures and lands, but even discarding your own cards; later, creatureless decks focused around quick spells and artifacts like The Rack and cheap mana enchantments could let you drop down to only Balance left in your hand with you having no creatures in play; Balance turned into a Mind Twist and Wrath Of God in one turn for your opponent for only two mana...

Juzam Djinn - again, losing life was considered so bad, the 5/5 creature for only four mana in a format with Dark Ritual was considered unplayable because you lost a life per turn; losing 1/20th of your life total for a creature that could take 1/4th of your opponent's was a "bad card" because of that 1/20th

Mystic Remora did and still sees play in 1v1! Particulalrly in Vintage where it can pop off from all the broken cheap and free fast mana artifacts and spells in that format

Phyrexian Dreadnought was dormant for a long time simply because of the rules.  Pre-6th edition, you couldn't respond to triggered abilities, so even though there was Reality Ripple and Vision Charm available to combo with it, it didn't work.  When 6th edition came out, it received power level errata like Lotus Vale - it didn't come into play unless you sacrificed the required stuff.  It wasn't until power level errata was removed that it saw play.

What the heck are you talking about with Cursed Scroll??? It was one of the most valuable cards in the set when Tempest came out.

You forgot that Karn the Great Creator can use his +1 ability to turn a land into a 0/0 creature, immediately destroying it

Mystic Remora also had a stint of playability in pauper when Arcum's Astrolabe was legal as a sideboard piece in Jeskai Ephemerate for the mirror. The deck revolved around playing Arcum's Astrolabe and bouncing it with Kor Skyfisher and played many other non-creature spells. Kor Skyfisher also allowed you to bounce your Mystic Remora after paying its cumulative upkeep once or twice, resetting the age counters.

For years a Lion's Eye Diamond sat in my collection. Only cared for, because I loved the Artwork, but never considered it a good card, due to it's discard mechanic. After pausing MtG for more than 20 years, I had a group of friends playing commander, and I looked through my collection/bulk with a friend, to check, if I have anything interesting to play and build decks.. well.. our surprise was high, when we stumbled upon the LED. His, that I have such a card, and mine, because of its value... and actual playability.

0:44 MY BOY!

Second Sunrise almost immediately had eggs. It just wasn’t widely known. Its called eggs because it used the eggs cycle from Odyssey block.
