Had a blast Matthew thanks for having me on.  🙏
*I'm not a huge fan of comparisons - it pushes the worst part of the camera space (Tribalism) on YouTube even more than it already is.  For anyone trying to compare these cameras - they're very different, pros and cons to both but at the end of the day they're both incredible.  I use the S1RII and obviously the ZR - I've used both on professional jobs.  Both can be used for any job and both will have areas you'll need a workaround for.  That's just how it is.  Nice job to Lumix and Nikon on what they've done with these cameras.

Brandon always out in the desert or somethin wild

The S1ii is a much better and complete camera but outside of work it catches dust. The ZR is a much more fun camera to use once you stop approaching it as a professional cinema tool.

i really wanna see more square sensors like why not just being able to have any orientation

saying the ZR isn't good for content creation due to the soft h.265, isn't quite correct. The soft h.265 image comes from h.265 NLog (not SDR or HLG). Shooting in SDR allows you to apply Picture Controls, that can be chosen, in camera, to provide the look one wants without additional grading. You can also load in new PCs created by others, to use. Keep in mind, not all content creators shoot in Log, the other h.265 profiles are fine to use and are not soft, some might have more sharpening but, again, that can all be tweaked in camera.  Some Nikon shooters prefer to shoot in Flat, with some tweaks (less sharpening, etc.) prior to filming, then grade later. Nikon color straight out of camera looks great and the look can be adjusted in post as well.

There are so many options on cameras (not just Nikon) that people aren't using, as they hear seasoned creators telling them they should shoot in Log. They purchase something based on that information, without fully understanding what their camera can do. Nikon camera has been able to shoot RAW internally, with 2 versions onboard since the Z9. The ZR has 3 versions of RAW internally but, the focus for folks new to the system, seems to be only the R3D. Now we have folks (again, new to Nikon) saying that's the only codec that should be used on the ZR but, due to the large file size it's useless and a paper weight.

When I got a Sony camera, I had to learn how to get the colors correct, as the standard profiles didn't look good. I learned to grade to fix that, then later found tweaks to use built in profiles to get a good image without editing. Sometimes folks just want to shoot and post, especially if just doing YouTube or shooting for Social Media. The ZR is a great product, much like any other camera today, they will get the job done. It's more than just the R3D codec, it can be used by creators and filmmakers alike.

Guys, with all due respect to you as excellent creators.

BUT I didn't see any objective conclusions in this video; it felt like a kitchen table conversation.

Let's put it this way: in professional work, it's more convenient to use a camera with good ergonomics-  controls, a comfortable grip, etc. This is generally why we love hybrid cameras-you don't need a ton of accessories. The S1 II doesn't even need a cage- all you need is the camera, a flash drive, a lens, and a set of filters-that's it-you can do it right away. And if you need an external monitor, you can always connect a smartphone-via cable or Wi-Fi-so we don't even need to lug a ton of accessories to the shoot just to set up a director's monitor.

But that's just mere speculation.

The main difference between these cameras is their true dynamic range (exposure latitude). The  ZR has only 7-8 stops (at a stretch), while the S1 II has 9-10 stops. Dynamic range is the main reason why large-scale filmmakers choose ARRI cameras, etc. Even color science takes a back seat.

I own both the ZR and S1 II, as well as RED cameras. As for color, you can get the same color on most cameras. But dynamic range is not.

And I won't even go into how much better the S1 II's focusing system is, how much better the matrix stabilization is, etc.

The camera’s display operates within the DCI-P3 color space, the standard color gamut used in digital cinema and DCP projection. This feature remains relatively uncommon in built-in camera monitors and even in many external on-camera displays, giving the Nikon ZR a clear advantage for monitoring cinematic colors accurately during production.

Wouldn’t it be better to have somebody that actually has experience with the Lumix S1II?  Brandon‘s never used it. I have both cameras and I would have to say that the Nikon ZR is a better camera for my needs.

Also, I don’t understand why people keep trying to figure out what the Nikon ZR is. It’s a camera you buy to make videos and photos with. If you like it, you like it.

Red / Blackmagic / Nikon / Panasonic / Arri / Leica all overlaps you guys are in a territory of overlap.  I love it we can choose depends on project flow.  Even recent L10/ Leica D Lux 8 is worth checking out ...why?  they are so much brighter than avg cam.  they are on steroids....😮. I am happy with pyxis 6k , eventhough 12k is there.  If i want compreased stuff, Leica SL2S is my benchmark, Raw is Ok with BMD, even Sigma fp, Monstro is OG for raw stuff we all acknowledge.  But Davinci is way to go without doubt.  happy to see you guys talk together.  🎉❤ PS:  12k Pyxis is a MUST for size and budget.  rent or loan it.  and use some German Glass

Matthew , Brandon - Thanks  for your  thoughts .  Also kudos to Brandon for the backdrop !

I would love to have a ZR with open gate. Because of the screen. The Lumix S1 II feels more like a professional tool with much more options.

You nailed it I have been a RED owner an shooter since 2009 the ZR is exactly the tool I wanted for my every day quick camera I have had mine since January and sold all my Sony mirrorless cameras. Great interview!

Great episode from the Zr guy and Lumix guy.

I want Lumix to make a S9R!

I love shooting a lot of different systems!! I'm playing with the S9 right now. I really love the BMD workflow and image!! I shoot Sony a lot for sports, so I guess I mostly shoot Sony, but a ZR is on the horizon for me soon!!!

The Zr is great and it will get even better. End of conversation.

Other manufacturers will be looking to add large screens and 32bit float in the future. Either jump for the Zr or wait for your favorite brand to respond eventually. Or even better, just use what you have.

Try SIGMA FP best budget cinema camera

Woah, that last bit about the app I entirely agree... That is still such a pain in the ass... Even with Lumix it's far from perfect. I don't understand why I have to use 2-3 different apps with my S5iix... Lumix Lab to put Luts onto the Camera - Lumix Flow if I connect via USB to use it as a monitor (The Sync Monitor option is not to my liking)... If I want to use Wifi I have to use Sync as somehow Flow doesn't want to connect... It should be one App... One app that does it all - and to it's best possible ability. Also if I connect to different devices - I don't want to fiddle around for ages to make it work again. It's such a headache... Even considered getting a real monitor instead of my phone, but... I just don't see myself caging my camera up and then taking it with me. Less is more, especially when you are always on the run. Instead of using resources to halfassedly develop 3 apps - put it into one... And while at it - give it some legacy support... I can't imagine it being that hard to build in support for my G80 for which I have to use ImageApp which makes it the 4th(!!!!!) app on my phone, just related to Lumix... Seriously. I love my Lumix Cameras, but in 2026 that's just a pain.

Hint:  Dual Conversion Gain HDR merging is highly patented. Just because you purchase the sensor, does not mean you have the DCG patent liscense to use it. Panasonic "can" use it. Did Nikon "not" get the liscense to use DCG??  ;-)

I’m really stuck in witch is better for if I want to make short films/ music video and advertisement or is there another option that’s even better?
