TAXI DRIVER or CHILDREN OF MEN next week?

A rube is not 90s thing, it refers to someone from a rural area who is easily manipulated and unsophisticated.

15:03 Miggs was the spunk-throwing prisoner next to Lecter's cell. Lecter manipulated him to kill himself by swallowing his own tongue as punishment for being rude to Starling. That was a way to ensure that Starling's visits would continue, as she wouldn't have to worry about walking past Miggs.

Correct. The FBI was looking to recruit more women at the time this movie was made. They provided a lot of cooperation with the production to inspire women to apply, including allowing filming on the Quantico campus which had never happened before.

Now you need to watch "Misery" with Kathy Bates and James Caan.

i love the moments this movie allows your brain to brew sinister images in your mind yourself without showing anything to gruesome. I love that interpretive aspect.

"Love your suit." Hannibal knew what Jack Gordon ("Buffalo Bill") was doing.

1:45 - The title is paradoxically one of the most poetic for one of the most unsettling films.

Anthony Hopkins won the Academy Award with the least amount of screen time ever for a winner, just over 16 minutes.

One detail to note: when Clarice realizes she's in Bill's house at the end, she can't "call for backup" because she doesn't have a cellphone (this is the early 1990s) and she drove there in her own dumpy little car (which doesn't have a police radio or car phone).  So she could only call for backup by going around to neighbors' houses and hoping that someone lets her in to use their phone.  In the time it takes her to do that, Bill could kill his prisoner and escape.

So her only hope of catching Bill and saving Catherine is to try and incapacitate him right there and then.

Fun reactions and discussion!

Great reaction guys 😁 A few bits of SOTL trivia below (fact checked as of 2025):

- The Silence of the Lambs is one of only three films to win the "Big Five" Oscars: Best Picture, Director (Jonathan Demme), Actor (Anthony Hopkins), Actress (Jodie Foster), and Adapted Screenplay (Ted Tally).
- Though often called a psychological thriller, it’s widely accepted as part of the horror genre and remains the only horror film to win Best Picture.
- Hopkins won Best Actor for just 16 minutes of on-screen time,  the second shortest performance ever to win in that category.
- Clarice Starling is widely regarded as one of cinema’s most respected female protagonists, admired for her intelligence, vulnerability, and competence - all portrayed without relying on sexualisation.
- The film was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

28:13 one of the best scenes in movie history!!!

I never get tired of rewatching this film, classic.

11:55 “I use to be obsessed with Tom Petty when I was a little guy.”  You are STILL a little guy! 😂😂😂

Hopkins ad libbed the "ssk ssk sssk" sound effect, Foster looked freaked out because she actually was.

31:47 I always hum this song when I wanna creep out my lady 😂 She just rolls her eyes at me whenever I do

Acumen - the ability to make good judgements.
Rube - an uneducated/uncultured person.

You're right, this is top tier cinema

“Hello Clarice.” …..😂

at the 1992 Oscars- the year Silence swept- the host, Billy Crystal had himself wheeled out in a strait jacket and mouth cover to start the monologue ala Hannibal Lector.
