How can Islamic microfinance help ordinary Pakistanis start or grow a business? What opportunities exist in Pakistan’s fisheries, aquaculture, and blue economy? And why does Pakistan still struggle to fully use the potential of its young workforce and coastal resources?

In this episode of Narratives, Munazza Siddiqui speaks with Ali Pesnani, Vice Chairman and Executive Director at SBC Group of Companies and Union Microfinance Company Limited, about his journey from banking to family business, fisheries, and microfinance.

Ali Pesnani shares his experience of building a career in banking, eventually reaching senior executive levels, before leaving banking in 2022 to join his family’s fifth generation fisheries business. He explains how the family business is being transformed into a more corporate operation and discusses plans for a fisheries and seafood IPO in Pakistan.

The conversation also explores Pakistan’s first Islamic microfinance initiative, how microfinance can help small entrepreneurs and families, how borrowers are guided on the use of funds, and the importance of responsible repayment. Ali shares examples of people who used microfinance to start meat supply, dry cleaning, transport, and other small businesses.

A major part of the discussion focuses on Pakistan’s fisheries and blue economy. Ali explains the potential of aquaculture, shrimp farming, seafood exports, coastal development, and the need for better education and training in the marine sector. He also discusses Pakistan’s seafood export potential, international markets, coastal communities, hygiene standards, marine pollution, recycling, and the role of government and the private sector.

The discussion also looks at why Pakistani universities need to develop more courses and training related to fisheries, aquaculture, maritime affairs, and the blue economy, creating new career and entrepreneurship opportunities for young people.

Ali Pesnani also shares his views on entrepreneurship, local manufacturing, exports, import substitution, business ethics, financial discipline, civic sense, and the importance of building trust in Pakistan’s business environment.

Watch the full conversation to understand how microfinance, fisheries, aquaculture, entrepreneurship, and Pakistan’s blue economy could create new opportunities for ordinary Pakistanis and young entrepreneurs.
