19 Old Ways That Still Work Without Power, Money, or a Trip to Town

On the first day of January, 1913, the Post Office started carrying packages to the door,
and inside a few years a farm could order a thing from a catalog and never leave the porch
to get it.
That trade was a good one, mostly. But some things on this place never needed the wagon,
the catalog, or the truck that came after both of them. Nineteen of them, still working
today, whether the road up this ridge is clear or washed out — no power, no money, and no
trip to town.
Number 8 is the mistake almost everybody makes before the lime water ever touches the
crock. And number one isn't a skill at all. It's the thing underneath every one of the
others, and nobody can hand it to you.

Every one of these solves a real problem when the power is out or the store is out of
reach — fire without matches, light without a bulb, clean water, flour, soap, food that
keeps through winter. I could teach you eighteen of them by supper. The last one takes
years, and it's worth every one.
Tell me in the comments which one of these your own family still does, without a store or
a truck anywhere near it — and tell me what county you're in. I'd like to know how many
places these nineteen are still alive in, quiet, nobody making a fuss about it.
None of this needed the truck to come up the ridge. It never did.
