Jazz tournament coming to EVO 2025

the lost art of a simple thank you:  "You Sound Great!" --> "Thank You."

"Thank you" = root position gratitude
"I'm just trying to be like you" = first inversion gratitude.

Patrick just wanna hear the OG triads from time to time.

I love the story Wynton tells about his dad “congratulating” him after he won his first Grammy. “Congratulations. But I hope this doesn’t make you think you can PLAY now?!?”

Out of all the jazz education channels here, even other “top level” players, Patrick is the only one that will tell it how it is. Thank you.

Jazz smash tournaments is all I'm able to envision in my head lol "You're maining an alto with that mpc and reed combo against a 10/5 bari doubler??"

when i was 18-19, i went to this open mic thing at the city i was studying in with a couple of friends, at the time i thought i was hot shit on the guitar, then a guy walks up to me & is like yo imma hop on stage & im playing this song you wanna jam? so i said yea okay sure, and i got absolutely fucking TROUNCED, like genuinely this guy wiped the floor with me i went back to my dorm crying lmao
but it was a real ass humbling experience, and it got me practicing like never before

Play for instrument pink slips, you snooze you lose that mark VI

Bro is just a chilled dude who‘s spittin facts

I’m 36 and have been playing music for years. I earned my music degree and thought I was pretty good until a 20 year-old came to a jam session a few yrs back and completely blew us away. That experience taught me to focus on what I can control, like my practice habits and how to improve them.

I also want to mention that I believe in healthy competition; we’re all trying to be the best versions of ourselves, and that’s a lifelong journey. But it’s important to remember what you excel at and what makes you unique.

Lately, I’ve been concentrating on getting respect in “traditional” jazz circles and mastering those fast chord changes, but in the process, I overlooked my own strengths.

I’m actually really good at playing ballads, and I often get called to perform at various black churches and even funerals, which is kind of ironic.

At funerals, people aren’t looking for fast tempos; they want to feel comforted during their time of mourning.

So, the takeaway is to always challenge yourself, but don’t forget the unique gifts you bring to the table. I’ve found that when those gifts align with hard work, that’s when God really makes things happen and opens doors.

Rule #6 jazz humble

Jazz moment 37😭

3:30 these guys were playin OUT!😂

I completely understand that first point, being the big fish in a small pond. I'm a high schooler, and honestly i think I'm the only horn player in my school that practices. So auditioning for everything you can truly does "humble" you. You dont know how good you are until you see the people that are reeally know what they're doin. Great Vid! (Also, what was that band that you auditioned for, lowkey want to check that out)

It’s also important to remember the difference between productive competition and destructive competition. And what I mean is - there’s a difference between competing in a gig labor market, and tearing each other apart over said competition in an industry that’s out to exploit us all.

We need to know how to stay humble and focus on what we can improve on as performers when we see that someone else can execute a particular skill or ability better than ourselves, and not lose sight of the large picture in which we all fit as performers. We need to build out healthy scenes with productive competition that encourages and cultivates skill development and honesty, while also avoiding destructive competition where we let jealousy blame other individual performers for our own lack of success. Sometimes (economically) successful performers aren’t even that good!

If I don’t win an ensemble audition (orchestra, premiere military band, etc.) I take note of what I can further refine and dial in. I shed out some new skills. I’m always looking to improve for myself, for my own ability to execute and express something better. I don’t let myself stay jealous of cats who have a seat somewhere, I try to figure out what I can do about my opportunities and what I can do to win gigs. That will never stop me from looking out for the performers and people I trust, and advocating for their abilities and success. It also won’t stop me from pushing the limits of what I can do, both for myself and for others.

An evil and violent jazz showdown sounds hilarious. Like that guy from Trigun.

Hi Pat, really true that jazz humble does not help people improve. There is nothing like the battle between Sonnie Rollins and Sonny Stitt on the eternal triangle album, this made them grow and give it all.

I'm coming for you Patrick🫵🏿

I’m trying to get like you Pat

Great video! Definitely true. Once I was hanging at smalls when I was like 26 and someone introduced me as a great young alto player and the guy looked at me and was like “young?” 😂😂😂. Healthy competition has been the single biggest driver of my growth in music.
I agree w you Pat keep on doing your thing.
