The great Joe Diorio said this.: "IN MUSIC, TWENTY YEARS....IS THE WARM-UP".   Thank-You Patrick for your work.

It Don't Mean A Thing If Ain't Got That... Matrixed Morphology?

Patrick Bartley during school recess: "where the swing at?, I don't see the swing."
Lol

as a 15 yo i snuck into the backstage area of a jazz club after a holdsworth concert, just to tell him i liked his music, i was like 'i wish i could play like that' and he actually sat down with me and gave me a 40 minute lesson, for free. i'm still humbled to this day. then there's people like this selling a dodgy course for 500 quid, idk

Honestly if this video was titled “Methods for learning jazz vocabulary and piano voicing techniques” it’d be fine

He's talking about jazz like it's a tech expo

This cat heard about that guy who won the world championship in French scrabble by memorizing the dictionary without learning to speak French and decided that's the best way to learn jazz

There are people that watch my videos, and then there are people who comment without watching the video

I’ve been studying jazz for a year now. One of the main things I hate about the experience so far is all the hocus-pocus bullshit that’s on the internet now. “This one Wes Montgomery lick will change your playing forever” - all this “get rich quick” shit. To talk about the music this way and trying to sell “get good quick” courses or whatever…It’s disrespectful to the music, the greats, and black culture. It’s not supposed to be academic but people like this slip into the scene somehow.

In all honesty, he’s not speaking “for *JAZZ*”

He’s discussing a way he found to be able to play it in a passable manner for the vast, vast majority of audiences.

Chasing the jazz GOATs and perpetuating the culture and legacy is the literal opposite of what he’s doing. He’s giving an honest breakdown of how he managed to hang without being laughed off the stage.

It’s Jazz Morphin’ Time!

We’ve gone from jazz theory to jazz theory philosophy

One big thing I learned through my jazz journey is that I could NEVER have done it alone.  It takes a lot of meeting musicians, getting to know them, going up to pro jazz cats and talking to them, and listening to past and current masters to be able to really learn jazz.  Many of these "Learn how to play jazz gigs in less than 2 years" videos talk all about leveling up as a "jazz" musician by yourself in the woodshed and often forget to mention that it's just as, if not more, important to go out and meet the jazzers, play with them, learn from each other, in order to truly become a seasoned musician (not limited to jazz!).

morphology sounds like a monk tune.... is this guy the reincarnation of monk? must be....

Me in the waiting room for the Patrick Bartley original tune Jazz Morphology Jutsu

“You’re probably wondering, how’d I do that?”
Turns out it was the jazz morphology matrix

This is why I love my professor. He’ll cut the fat, he takes no bs. Transcribe, practice using chord tones to lead between changes, Transcribe, learn to sight read, transcribe, practice swinging to a metronome, etc. the PROBLEMS aren’t complex, they just need GRINDING and nobody wants to grind.

Honestly if you grind like an hour a day on any solo that catches your attention and try to implement it on your own, it’ll teach you more than any video, hands down.

The true secret to jazz:

1) buy the matrix course
2) sound bad
3) buy another course
4) still sound bad
5) comment that Pat is wrong about how the course didn’t help and none of these courses address the real work needed.

I spent almost 7 years studying this music "to be a professional" and it killed me. I spent so much time doing whatever I thought I needed to be doing to get gigs, learning patterns, standards, ear training, composition, arranging, and the whole time I'd completely neglected the art, completely neglected the community. Without the soul of it, without the friends and elders you play for, you have nothing. All I did was become a very technically competent singer who would wake up every day and say nothing to no-one in a room, by himself, until I got so burnt out that I stopped. Fostering that inner-child curiosity, maintaining those friendships, that respect for community, that's the key to finding meaning in it. It's been about 3 years now, maybe I'll be back one day, maybe I won't. But if I do ever come back, it's not going to be to "get the gig", it's going to be because I'll have an idea I think is cool to share, and because I'll have people that I can share it with.

I earned a Bachelor's degree in Music with a specialization in Piano under the guidance of Russian teachers. I was also a member of a jazz band led by a saxophonist from New Orleans. Later, I joined a band of musicians who knew nothing about music theory and simply followed their instincts.
I can honestly say that the only thing that ruins music is believing there's only one right way to learn or teach it.
From my Russian teacher, I learned that a great teacher shows you how not to depend on a teacher in order to play, read, interpret, or analyze music. From jazz, I learned that when you allow yourself to listen and feel without judgment, something genuine is born. And from the self-taught musicians, I learned that music lives within each of us in different ways, and that only you get to decide what you want to feel and hear.
