A MicroShift drivetrain would've cost you even less. They have the Advent, a 1x9 system; they also have the AdventX, a 1x10 system. For less than the CUES 1x9 cost you, you could've installed the MicroShift AdventX. Oh, and the best part is that the MicroShift drivetrains can use Shimano HG freehubs; you don't have to change that out!

I would actually prefer the 42t crankset.

Not an upgrade. It's a conversion to road bike with a MTB frame. Much of the reason for 2x and 3x chainrings is not just more range but the ability to downshift and upshift quickly in fast changing terrain...hence mountain bike. With that 1X you may may have to to 3 or 4 downshift to get the same ratio..hope you have gamers thumbs.

I got a 9S-11-46 system for $120 and its great for all purposes. I love it.

Then I bought a used Merida big nine with 2 x and a good enough suntour fork.
Probably I will sell the Trek with the sid fork.

In my opinion 2 x drivetrains are the sweetspot for the type of trails i ride.
I bought a used Trek superfly. The preowner built it from a 2 x to a 1 x 11 and I hate it because of it.

Upgraded my early 1990s GT steel MTB (I'm not doing heavy offroad rides with this, rather urban and light offroad, tires are Conti Double Fighter and it also has dynamo hub with lighting, mudguards and a rear rack) last year and I chose the 10-speed Cues (originally I wanted a 7 speed internal gear hub but couldn't fit the Clickbox on) because the 11 speed shifter and cassette became a little too expensive tbh and first with a 42T 175mm square taper crankset but recently replaced it with a dub bottom bracket and Evosid 165mm crankset (5dev clone) and 38T chainring.
And I kinda got addicted to 1x, since 2023 one of my bikes is with a 12-speed Pinion and on derailleurs before that I often shifted up two or three gears at once when accelerating as the jumps between each gear were very small, on that gearbox I only need single shifts.
Also just converted my old Cube hardtail from the 3x10 SLX/XT mix (of course I'll keep these to upgrade some other bike) to 1x11 Cues and dropbars and similar Evosid crankset with 38T chainring, I'm just waiting for a longer spindle to arrive as the clearance of the chainring was too small even with a couple spacers and also the clearance of crankarm ends to chainstays wasn't terribly large.
I wouldn't say that these old 3x drivetrains are total crap but you can't simply multiply the number of gears on the cassette with that of the chainring as you'll have a couple of combinations that have an almost identical ratio and "impossible" ones because of the chainline which causes front derailleur rub like smallest chainring and smallest sprocket or largest chainring and largest sprocket and most people aren't in need of so many combinations to get the perfect cadence and wattage.

Eigentlich unsinnig nur weil es günstiger ist,von 21 Gänge auf nur 9 zu wechseln. Wenn es ein altes Rad gewesen wäre ( wo man nicht weiß ob die Geometrie das mitgemacht hätte) wäre das logisch gewesen. Aber bei dem modernen Rahmen hätte man locker auf 11 Fach ( oder sogar auf 12 Fach) umbauen können.
Zumal eine deore deutlich günstiger gewesen wäre,als die cues. Aber wenn man nicht viel Ahnung von der Materie hat, kommt sowas bei raus.

1x9 is more simple and tidy rather then 3x9 or whatsoever 😄
Yet it’s reduced some weight
Easier to clean and easy to maintain 👍

if you need to change the drivetrain, it's OK...
if not - just dont doi it.....
its a sales pitch....if youre not profesional, half of kg dont mean a thing....
if you have problems with crank length, size of ratios for speed, or hill climbing, then when you have out of specs drivetrain - its worth it....
cuess is ok... 2x10 from 3x9 makes sense...
all the time just maintain your bike...
let it fit the purpose...

I lived in Poland for just short of 5 years and only rode my bike a handful of times. In retrospect, a truly wasted opportunity. Thanks for the video. I have a 2007 Klein Attitude XV that is currently 3x9, but I plan to go 1x11.

I dont really understand this 1x mania. What is wrong with having 3x system? You will lose some gear range and for what? Saving 200 grams or so? It is reallz pi*sing me off because these days you need to get a custom built bike in order to get something else than 1x when speaking about MTB. I bet that in few years it will get back to 2x or 3x and every youtuber will make videos about how much the 1x system sucks.

Thank you.  I think I already mentioned that in Thailand we converted a hard tailed Trek 3x9 to a 1x9 with 32t - and my son-in-law loves it.  Maybe I will put a 34t on it, next time over, but I personally like the granny gears for sand & mud (of which Thailand has plenty of) on cross-country rides.  However, my 1x12 Canyon Neuron blows everybody away, except on the highways - his lighter/no deep treads cross-county tires zap by me!

3x9 is still the best 😎 better than any 1x12, and I have that too

You had suggested a few years ago for a cheap reliable fork. The Manitou Markhor was the suggestion. I bought a 29" and upgraded the lockout and upgraded the ABS. (I snapped the frame it was on) This time around I'd like to suggest the X-Fusion Slide 34 HLR 29" to you. The price is a little bit less than Markhor but with more tuning capability. Good luck!
