I am featuring pastels in September here on The Frugal Crafter. Don't worry, I will still have Watercolor Wednesday, Frugal Friday, and Sat chat. These pastel videos will fall on Tuesdays and maybe Thursdays throughout the month of September. You see, my kids all moved out for college and I need to keep busy LOL! I am planning 4-6 soft pastel tutorials and 2-4 oil pastel tutorials. I'll be using a variety of brands in these lessons but you can use what you have or from the basics listed below.
I am also putting my Soft Pastel for beginners class on sale for 50% off this month to celebrate Pastel Month! https://lindsayweirich.teachable.com/... *Offer good on one-time purchases or payment plans. The offer ends 10/1/22. Use coupon code PASTEL50 if the discount doesn't appear automatically
Glossary:
Soft Pastels are pastels that feel like chalk but they are very pigmented. They can be hard (like pastel pencils) medium or buttery soft.
Oil pastels are the pastels that feel kinda like lipstick or a soft crayon.
Pan Pastels are soft pastels in a cake that you apply with a sponge or applicator.
Supplies (affiliate links used)
Paper: You can use any pastel paper you like but I will use the Canson XL Sand Grain Dry Mixed Media Paper for these lessons because it is excellent quality and affordable. I will use natural and grey but if you can only pick one I'd choose natural: https://shrsl.com/3o549
Soft Pastels: I recommend the Faber Castell Gold Faber set of $72: https://shrsl.com/3okhc or the set on Mundyo set of 64 https://amzn.to/3Q86gTk (If you already have a good assortment of pastels you can totally use what you have)
Foam applicators: https://amzn.to/3e5Js9z
These next items are nice to have, and I will use them, but not essential to following along:
Pan pastels-painting set of 20 Amazon: https://amzn.to/3PZAFmJ Blick: https://shrsl.com/3okhv *this will come with some sponges and applicators
Sennelier half stick extra soft pastel sets (amazon has had amazing deals recently but check Blick too!) Amazon: https://amzn.to/3KAQPC6 Blick: https://shrsl.com/3oki8 *I prefer the half-stick sets because they come unwrapped and seem less crumbly.
Pastel pencils: https://amzn.to/3CGXB7r or Blick and you can just order the colors you want rather than a set. these are good for sketching and details:https://shrsl.com/3okig
Nupastels: sets ad open stock at blick https://shrsl.com/3okil or sets on amazon https://amzn.to/3wNv3VZ
For oil pastels, an assorted set of 48 or so will do nicely like this set by Mungyo: https://amzn.to/3AXt57X or this set by Paul Rubens: https://amzn.to/3CLEqsY
For protecting your work after it is finished, or adding tooth between layers, you might want to purchase a fixative https://shrsl.com/3omfh or if longevity is not a concern and you just want to prevent smearing you can use cheap aerosol hairspray. I like the wrap my paintings in glassine to protect them until I am ready to frame them: https://amzn.to/3wPDErb
