The Mitch slap never disappoints!!❤😂

Pentatonix changed acapella forever. For some fun try Can't Hold Us ♥

Welcome to the best a capella group out there. They have literally changed a capella since they began in 2011. Three of them know each other from high school and once they began college, decided to enter a TV contest for a capella groups and added a bass singer and a beat boxer, since the show required at least 5 members. They won the season the entered in and set off for LA, California. But the record company, Sony, who signed a contract with them as part of their win, dropped them two weeks later. Undaunted, they rehearsed and posted songs on YouTube. They quickly won over fans who became patrons and helped finance their journey. A few months later they began using a film crew and did proper music videos, finally entering one in the Grammy's. They won their category...which actually had to be made for them. It hadn't existed before. Sony realized they made a mistake and signed them back on with a smaller subsidiary, Madison House. They kept going and increasing their fan base. And 15 years later, they are still the top a capella group out there.
Members are:
1st singer: Scott Hoying, baritone. Big, tall blond guy. Scott has a massive vocal range and frequently takes over the bassline when the bass is singing a verse.
2nd singer: Avi Kaplan, basso profundo. Guy with the long hair, beard and beanie. Avi is an opera trained bass with a very, very low rumble. He's been known to break speakers.
3rd singer: Kirstin ( Kirstie) Maldonado, mezzo-soprano. Kirstie has a lovely strong voice with an impressive vibrato and great belting abilities. You will see her change her looks (especially her hair color) often, so don't be fooled into thinking they changed the female member...it's her.
4th singer: Mitch Grassi, countertenor. Smaller white male with the big hat. Mitch is one of the few true countertenors in the world. He can sing as low as baritone and also sing higher than Kirstie...and even does whistlenotes. Mitch is another chameleon, like Kirstie...he changes his looks often,
5th member: Kevin Olusola, beatboxer, cellist, tenor. Kevin is a man of many talents. He's not only a great beatboxer, he's a fantastic cellist and has studied with Yo Yo Ma. He also speaks several languages, including Mandarin. Kevin was writing his MCAT to get into Yale when Scott called him about doing the beatboxing for them for the TV show. Once he passed the exam, he said yes, went on the show and never looked back.
There was one member change in 2017. Avi was dealing with a lot of stress from personal things and all the touring that Pentatonix was doing, and wanted to pursue his own singing career, so he quit and was replaces a few months later by Matt Sallee, a young baritone with wonderful, deep, rich vocals and capable of singing all the bass that Avi had.

They are still going strong after 15 years. Saw them recently in London on their 2026 European Tour. Their live performances are amazing. Grammy winners, Holywood Walk of Fame Star. You won't regret going down this rabbit hole.

Welcome to PTX the family- we know that
they don't do covers they do upgrades.
One of the commentators already provided short biography and I would just add this. There is no leader. They serve the music first. Doing what a song calls for means you will see different people take the lead.   The members of Pentatonix are able to set their egos aside because they respect each other after 15 years or 8 years.  And that leaves them free to concentrate on taking care of both the people they love and the music they love. This focus on doing whatever is best for the music is, in my opinion, the thing that makes Pentatonix greater than the sum of its parts. And their focus on caring for one another is the reason we like them as people, not just as singers.

Things you need to know as a new Pentaholic, because if you get these wrong, other Pentaholics may come after you
1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2-  Some instruments are included in the last Christmas album because they wanted to re-create the 1940's and Swing feel. Until then, if Kevin is playing the cello you see that in the video 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

The human voice is the greatest musical instrument of all.

The beat boxer is a cellist and also has an excellent voice.

Hallelujah has been covered so many times... but this is THEIR song now it's that good

Each one in the group is a soloist--but they each work well with each other.❤❤❤

Go down the Pentatonix list. All of their voices are amazing! He does the beat box sounds.

Everything Pentatonix does is amazing. They are just as good live!

What can they do? What can't they do... they do it all from rap to the heavenly "The Prayer". My favorites, The Prayer, Can't Hold Us, Sing, and Imagine.

It's so pretty I nearly choked out crying, it made my eyes water

That was Ari on bass... his voice gives me chills

I feel they preform this the best. So prefect!!

Welcome to PTX! Literally throw a dart at their catalog, whatever it hits will not let you down.

Pentaholics, unite! We have a NEW PTX reactor!!! I repeat: a NEW PTX reactor!!!

Just another Pentaholic here to watch another newbie react to Pentatonix and experience the goosebumps and Mitch slap!  You didn’t disappoint and looking forward to hearing you react to more of their over 200 songs and videos. 🎉

Don’t miss their cover of John Lennon’s “Imagine”! It’s my favorite!

I love their version of Hallelujah so much!
