This feels… familiar…

54:40 I think the intention is that the enemies are Bowser Jr's mediocre drawing of the real enemies from memory with the magic paintbrush, so they're kind of goofy.

Finding 3 hour retrospective discussions from my millennial youth video games is like discovering a new drug every time

Regarding Yoshi disappearing when you hit water, my favorite fan theory was that the Yoshi eggs in Sunshine were creations of Bowser Jr's brush, and obviously paint creations can't survive water. This was strengthened by the fact that Yoshi breaks into paint bubbles.

This is my personal favorite 3D Mario game, btw. Always loved the vibes and the more challenging gameplay

I'll never be tired of good-faith discussion and opinions of Sunshine

number one point about the fluddless stages: if shadow mario can do it, you can too

Yep. Episode specific blue coins. Blue coins for doing things most people would never even consider, like spraying a waterfall. No tracker for coins.

But, as you say, the difficulty gradient is great, the search and find is great, and at least they’re not just shines (like everything is a moon in Odyssey). Honestly, if they were named or numbered and you could see which you already had, they would be pretty much perfect.

Love this game. The moveset and high skill ceiling is fantastic. But yeah it's not like other Mario games with a welcoming difficulty curve. But for those who know, they know.. this game is great, it just takes a whille to get there. Great video

I love and miss this game so much. I think it was my first ever 3D game I’ve ever owned and it will forever be close to my heart. Took turns playing with my brother lol

This is (among you other deep dives) a great video to download on the phone to save data and then watching/listening in sections over a few days. Thanks!

2:01:11 I’m fascinated by this recurring take that obscure or out-of-the-way = bad. These are all some of my favorite Shine Sprites because of this: you’re rewarded for paying attention to oddities and getting immersed.

38:41 the shame of failing the challenge kills Mario because his ego is so big.

The only criticism I could really find in your retrospective is that in my opinion this game feels perfectly fine to play and the controls are arguably best in the series for me but thats my opinion

Honestly, Blue coins not all appearing in one episode wouldn't even be that bad if not for the fact that various coins are tied across multiple episodes. so like... there can be coins that appear in episodes 3, 5, and 7 for example that are all actually the same coin in different places.

It would also be a good option to have 1 blue coin per episode as a micro-collectathon.

as someone said in the comment before me most likely, Shadow Mario (B.J) creates the enemies in Super Mario Sunshine, they are most likely HIS representation of common enemies drawn by a toddler. Excellent video btw :)
