My daddy was a coal miner. He was born in 1907 and he first worked in a mine at the age of twelve. He married my mom in 1927. Everyone was so poor. The only wedding gift they received was from the man who ran the company store. It was a decorative bowl that had the coal company name and the year printed on it. Mom cherished that bowl till she died (in 2009 at the age of 97). I was a late in life baby born in 1954. By the time I came along life was a little easier. My father passed away at the age of 70 from complications associated with Black Lung. They both loved Tennessee Ernie Ford and I can remember watching his tv show which ran from 1956 thru 1961.

Great old tune. Another really good song to react to is Jimmy Dean's Big Bad John. Yes, later he got into the sausage business.

I'm 80 years old and have been blessed to have lived thru decades of good music like this. Glad to see younger folks are able to experience it too.

Coal miners did it for many years. The company owned mines; the company owned homes and stores.

My father was the son of a coal miner from Pennsylvania in the 1920's-1943. There were 11 kids so they were in debt to the company store. His older brothers worked in the mines too trying to get out of debt so their dad could retire and move out of state. His oldest sister, at the age of 16, got married ànd moved with her husband to Michigan, where he got a job building cars. They finally were able to pay the family debt off and they moved to Baltimore Maryland. I remember my dad telling how the miners had to fill so many coal cars for one dollar a day and if they didn't meet their quota they didn't get paid for that day. So as bad as unions can be they were a Godsend in the coal mines.

You HAVE TO listen to his rendition of How Great Thou Art! It will change how you hear that song from then on.

I grew up listening to this as one of my Mom’s 45 records. Ford made an appearance on the I Love Lucy show that was absolutely hilarious.

Love Tennessee Ernie Ford. One of my favorite songs of his is Shenandoah

I couldn’t tell you when I heard it the first time because it was just a part of my life, probably from birth. Always loved it, his voice just grabs you and doesn’t let go.

This song was a huge hit the year I was born (1956). I heard it all the time growing up.

I was raised in northern Appalachia, near where Kentucky and West Virginia meet. So many sad stories and broken hopes and dreams. Thanks for the kick back to my youth.

Hello from the hills and hollers of Kentucky 🐎 👋...for me it takes me to Loretta Lynn's song about her father that she wrote ( A Coal Miners Daughter )

I've loved this song for a long time. Another great song in the same vein "King of the Road" by Roger Miller

I was 9 years old when this was released in 1955, yet I remember every word and every musical nuance of it. At that time, I thought it was a "neat" song; today, I cried as I listened to it, because I could really understand what it meant.

My dad worked with Tennessee Ernie and Chet Atkins when they were all on the radio at WNOX in Knoxville, Tennessee in the late 30’s. Many stories from those days!

Tennessee had a great baritone voice. He was also a fine concert pianist and his gospel music was very moving. A true artist.

My teenage granddaughter's high school jazz choir sang this a Capella last year. It was wonderful!

Times have changed since the sixties. My father raised 6 kids, has a new house, my mom was a housewife, we always had a nice car, good food and clothes, all on his single paycheck. He worked for Alcoa and took care of us all on one paycheck. you can't do that today.
