With a 100k truck I don’t mind parking far away in the parking lot . Also I’ve never had any issues in any drive-through with my 450 especially because of the extra turn radius. I daily drive my 450

I will never tow across country if my weights exceed the payload by even a pound. Having been sued for $1 million dollars American by a pizza delivery guy that tripped on my sidewalk I am extremely cautious about anything that could be an issue in a potential lawsuit. No, he didn't win, but it had my wife and I under tremendous stress for over 4 years. Every asset we owned was at risk if we had lost that lawsuit. Make sure that you have enough truck for your needs. Don't risk having an accident and being sued due to an overloaded truck.

5th wheel campers usually 20-25% pin weight. Not 15-18%

Back in 2000 when my folks retired, they went out and bought a 32' 5th wheel trailer to go travel all the places they always wanted to go in the US. Dad was well versed in towing from his days in oil and gas in Alberta, and other areas with heavy trucks, so when he went shopping for a tow vehicle, he was initially looking to get something that'd easily capable of towing a huge 5th wheel, and he thought he'd go with a Dpdge dually with a Cummins. At that time there were VERY few around, long and short was that he ended up with a 2000 F Super Duty dually crew cab 4x4 with the venerable 7.3 turbo diesel. What a gorgeous truck that was !! When they started towing across the line, they quickly discovered they chose well, cuz more than once, they saw State Highway Patrols pulling over a lot of Canadians for exceeding their state laws when it came to towing !! They talked to a few couples that had run into issues, mainly by using too little truck for the load. Key thing here, another person posted, you're not going to 'Get away with it', especially in the US. They are apparently much stricter, and the laws often err the side of caution, as opposed to 'what the truck CAN tow' !! They traveled enough around the US back in the day that they realized that there is NO substitute for the safety, diveability and power of a well chosen tow vehicle ! All you need is one incident, which may be the ONLY incident, where you'll realize  .... I shoulda bough a better tow vehicle !! Dad also said there were a couple states I think where by law, you COULDN'T legally tow a big 5th with a SRW truck !! Be smart, just getting by is NOT a wise move ! Don't let this reality hit you coming down a steep winding grade with your trailer pushing you all over the road !! You can only die once, but with the right setup, you can go a lot longer !!

10:29 explain how your butt felt to the court when you’re being held liable for exceeding the door jam sticker weight ratings. It truly doesn’t matter how much the truck can actually handle vs. its ratings, because you’ll be legally liable for anything that happens. That’s really the risk assessment and personal decision that is in play.

It would great to do a video on 1/2 ton vs 3/4 ton with the same trailer and similar “ratings”.  It’s a huge difference and most people think that because their 1/2 ton is rated, then it’s fine.

Great video.   A year ago I had a super sweet F150 King Ranch PowerBoost.   I loved the hybrid and used the PowerBoost to run power tools all the time.  Unfortunately that battery took 400 lbs off the payload.   I bought a 25’ Airstream and they have pretty heavy tongue weight for size.   When I did the math I  didn’t have the cargo capacity for all we carry.   We did a 400 mile trip with my wife driving her SUV with all our stuff and  only one propane tank.  I could tell I was too close to the trucks limit.   I upgraded to an F250 with a 7.3 Godzilla.  Huge weight off my mind.  I got rid of the WDH in favor of a Shocker air support hitch and added air bags.   Very happy with this rig.

As a Swedish proffesional truckdriver, I really appreciate this comprehensive video with attention to just about every possible aspect of towing. Very, very well done!

Just one thing though… if you are a professional truckdriver with tens of years of experience, you are the built in safety. But if you tow that 5th wheel once or twice a year, you do not have enough experience to feel what’s going on with your setup. I guess that’s what the door jam stickers are there for 😁

Obviously payload depends on how truck is optioned out.  Lots of speculation in this vid about payload.  A platinum optioned truck will always have less payload than an XLT.

I really appreciate this video because I actually lived this problem. Most new folks like myself at the time (five years ago) went to a certain RV chain dealership and they mainly talk you in that you're have enough truck to pull a 40 foot trailer and did not even go through the numbers that your video does in fact, after much education after the fact, I decided to trade in my 40 foot fifth wheel and size down to a 33 foot that had the right hitch pin weight despite my truck being able to pull it. It was a payload issue. Your video does a great job especially when you start getting into liability at the 16:30 MARK. I will just add if you are overweight and you are in a major accident, they will check your weight and if you are found even not at fault, but you are overweight, you are liable, regardless because you are knowingly driving a vehicle overweight. I got this straight from our local law-enforcement and insurance carrier, which helped me in making my decision to downsize to a smaller fifth wheel.  however, not to contradict myself I do agree it is a driver's ability to determine if 1 pound, 500 pounds, or 1000 pounds over to use your example is risk acceptable. It's a slippery slope that I think each person must risk assess their situation and stay on top of their weight management when pulling a heavy RV like this.

Every commercial driver has entered the chat with wtf. We get tickets when our pin weight exceeds axle limits because it’s a public safety hazard. Why do recreational vehicles get the pass when the drivers are far less trained or experienced and their vehicles are far less safe?

Not really sure what you're talking about with the Ford website. But if you go to the website entering your VIN the website will tell you exactly what you can tow and carry with that exact vehicle that you are looking up.

You are the first YouTube channel I've seen that actually states that the wheelbase is one of the important factors of towing I drive a GMC 3500 crew cab dually and I tell everyone the truck feels in control of the trailer not the opposite

I bumper tow a 16000lb dump trailer with my 2017 F250 diesel. Seems to handle it well. I had 6 yards of gravel in it which put the weight just under 18000. `the truck/trailer was overloaded going by the numbers but it felt fine to tow.
