The last 20 mins is just astonishingly moving

All that I want to say is that when this film ended, I sat there and sobbed.  I couldn't even explain to my wife what I was feeling.   I felt broken in so many ways.   I have never been touched like this by a film.... that addresses love, differences, joy, guilt, sacrifice, anger, pain, forgiveness and deep spiritual acceptance.   Just wow.

That final moment with Jessie Buckley took my breath away😭

Everyone is giving props to the two lead actors, and rightly so, but tbh the most memorable performance from this movie for me was Jacobi Jupe, the actor that plays hamlet. HE was the reason I cried twice on this movie. He made Hamlet so important for me. If the performance of hamlet wouldnt have been as believable, his death wouldn’t have meant as much to me. One of the best kid performances I’ve seen in a long time alongside the kid from adolescence. He earns my spot for best supporting actor.

Side note: in interviews Chloe Zhao has described how, in their first meeting, by a stream at Telluride a few years ago, Paul Mescal convinced her to direct this when she wasn’t sure that she wanted to do it. So, thank you Paul Mescal.

Jessie Buckley’s Oscar is a lock!

Jessie Buckley is a magnificent actress, The first work of Jessie's I saw was Wild Rose and I was fascinated. From that moment on, I knew she would only grow in the industry. I'm thrilled with all the acclaim her performance is receiving, and I'll be rooting for her this awards season.

I'm  84, male  and for about 10 years now, I've been crying at movies. Not just tears and sniffles. I sob full outright through the credits and when the lights come up and the theater is empty. I'm  afraid of this movie. But, I must see it. My spouse is tired of this so I'm planning to go with friends and hoping there will be keepers among them. I've been an active movie goer my whole life. I've seen everything. But when Tom Hanks said, "earn this" everything changed.
Wish me luck.

Saw it yesterday and I have to say I did feel heart-wrenched about it. But the last 10-15 minutes as soon as Agnes watched the play itself that I got teary-eyed. The part when Hamnet walked into the darkness of the theater backdrop and Agnes smiled as he walked away was quite symbolic.

Away from the lusciousness of the outside forest scenes, I thought the interiors were sublimely lit, like a series of Old Dutch Master (Vermeer, notably) tableaux. Gorgeous to look at, Brian.

The amount of incredible talent involved in making this film is amazing. From the actors, cinematography, sets and especially the rarely mentioned, the "Extras"! In the final 10 minutes the raw emotion on the  faces audience watching the closing scenes of Hamlet is one I will never forget; wonderment, shock, compassion, fear, empathy and a communal bond of love towards the dying Hamlet. The faces of each of them went beyond anything ever seen from any Extras in film that I can think of. They deserve recognition and so too the emotions caught by the camera crew.

Jesse Buckley was great in Wicked Little Letters too.

I left the theatre, but the movie stayed with me. I sobbed at so many times thorougout, wrecked at the end, kept sobbing on my way home and cried my eyes out there for at least half an hour. And as you say, not because it was manipulative, but because I’ve seen and felt that pain, the loss, the grief, the anger, the gilt, the numbness, all of it. The story trascend time and place. It is so deely human that I feel anyone who has lived and lost can relate to it.

Wow!  Brian, I can't wait to see this!  I love Jesse Buckley and Paul Mescal, and I am so hoping for Max Richter to win an Oscar for his music.  He is so overdue for major recognition.

So thrilled to see you loved it. The book has stuck with me for years. Cannot wait to revisit it with the audiobook narrated by Jessie Buckley and to sob in theaters alongside everyone else.

Not surprised that you are calling it a masterpiece. The novel stayed with me for weeks after I read it - one of the rawest and on target depictions of acute grief I’ve ever read. And Jessie Buckley and a gifted and just waiting for the starring role that  would shine her light. I loved her in Wild Rose and Women Talking. Hamnet should put her name in lights. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Brian, you gave an excellent summary of why this film and the main actors should win academy awards! Tears were running down my face for the entire last third of the film. Jessie Buckley's performance was extraordinary and Paul Mescal's was less dramatic but still wonderful. The direction and choreography drew me into the film to such an extent that I felt that I was inside it. Just a true masterpiece.

Hamnet is by far my favourite book of all time. I’m so happy to hear that the adaptation is doing it justice!!

OMG! Just finished seeing “Hamnet”. There were several different points, where I sobbed. It was absolutely amazing and I loved every minute of it. Jessie Buckley is definitely getting an Oscar Nomination for Best Actress and Paul Mescal should get an Oscar Nomination, too.
Now I’ve got to see “Hamlet” again.
