TV, Olivier and the Christmas tree - the three pillars that supported the New Year in the USSR. The most anticipated holiday of the year, for which people prepared for months: they stood in lines for scarce products, saved champagne, sewed costumes for children and waited for the main event of the night - the New Year's broadcast from the blue screen.

In this issue of The Documentary, we analyze in detail what the New Year was really like in the communist empire: the cult of television, the "Blue Light", greetings from the general secretaries, Ronald Reagan's speech, the illusion of abundance against the background of total shortages, the New Year's table, Olivier of the "Soviet model", tangerines once a year, the Christmas tree as a propaganda tool and children's matinees.

This is a story about one holiday without queues - at least for a few hours. About a day when the impoverished reality was disguised by streamers, champagne and a television picture.
