What really happened to Ukraine in the 90s? The collapse of the USSR and the declaration of independence did not bring a ready-made state: it had to be built in the midst of economic collapse, hyperinflation, devaluation of savings, mass unemployment, crime and a large redistribution of property.

In this video "Stories for Adults" we tell the first decade of independent Ukraine. How did Ukrainians survive in the 1990s? Where did the karbovanets, "shuttles", spontaneous markets, racketeering and financial pyramids come from? How did privatization take place, why did a country with a powerful industry rapidly become impoverished, when did the hryvnia appear and how were future oligarchic groups formed?

And without it, it is difficult to understand where modern Ukraine came from and why the decisions of that decade still affect our politics, economy and society.
