💔 "She asks about you every Sunday."

The nurse said it in the lobby, holding the bag I had just handed to the front desk, warmly, the way you say a nice thing to somebody's daughter. I said: she doesn't want to see me. And she stopped and said: who told you that?

Lamya is a home health aide in Minneapolis. Nineteen years looking after other women's mothers.

Her own mother Fatima came from a village outside Nablus in 1977, lived alone on Twenty-Eighth Street for sixteen years after her husband died, and drove until she was seventy-six, badly, and nobody could stop her. In 2017 she had a stroke. It took her left side and her speed and the ability to use a telephone. It did not take one per cent of her mind.

Five weeks after she moved into the care home, Lamya's older sister called and said the staff had asked for visits to be reduced — that their mother was unsettled afterwards. And then she said the one thing Lamya could not argue with: you know this better than I do, you do this for a living. Isn't that what they say about agitation?

It is. It's a real thing. Lamya has explained it to other people's families in other people's kitchens.

So for eight years she drove forty minutes every three weeks, handed a bag over the front desk — a cardigan, biscuits, a card in bad Arabic — and drove home. Seventy-one times. Her mother was forty feet away...

This is not a story about revenge through lies or manipulation.

It's about the explanations that are good. Not the obvious lies — you catch those in a week. The clinical, reasonable ones that somebody who knows what they're talking about could have said. Those last eight years.

If you enjoy emotional family dramas, betrayal, and satisfying karma rooted in real life, this story will stay with you long after it ends.

✨ "I thought they came in the post."
Seventeen times in eight years, on a form, she had written down both her daughters' names.
