I had the great pleasure of meeting Donald O'Connor in the mid 80's at The World Disco Dance Championship TV show in London , where I was engaged as the shows off screen announcer . What an absolute gentleman he was , and it was huge thrill to meet this wonderful modest and friendly man . Between you and me , I always rated him as a more creative dancer than Gene Kelly . RIP .
When I was in the 6th grade 1956. I wrote to Donald o,Connor and many other celebrities. I received a picture of Donald. He and William Holden were the only 2 that sent me a picture of themselves. That was 70 years ago!
He was the best. It is a real shame that his life was so troubled both professionally and personally. He deserved so much better. Singin' In The Rain would not have existed without his presence in it.
My late Mother was a big fan of Donald and his movies especially "Francis the Talking Mule" films...I had no idea about the way he had been treated but I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, Hollywood seems to like controlling their major talents to the point of excess....sad!! RIP Donald💎
Donald O'Connor was a hard working lovable character who contributed to the Golden Age of Musical Comedy that grew out of the old Vaudeville traditions of an earlier era. His life was full of drama both good & bad. I guess this is the fate of people like Donald who strive for the stars & sometimes stumble & fall from great heights back to earth with the rest of us mere mortals.
