Back when Event Horizon was first released back in 1997, it slipped so quietly past the loud promotions that I had no idea it would go on to become one of the cult classics in the genre. It was a commercial failure and the critics blasted the film. Also, it didn’t help that Paramount trimmed roughly thirty minutes of the gory footage. However, even though it was initially brushed under the rug as just another sci-fi horror entry, the legacy started to build over time as the fans discovered the true charm of the narrative. I found the story of this mystery spaceship in space rather intriguing, and now, with a couple of new comic book series, the franchise finally has the limelight that it always deserved. But, perhaps, more mysterious than the story itself was the titular ship, Event Horizon, the government black-project built to fold space itself that came back from its maiden voyage with something worse than vacuum. In this video, I will explore the anatomy of this unique spaceship, and sit tight for this journey as I tear apart the fabric of this otherworldly horror.

Saw this one in theaters. Thanks to edited trailers on the only tv station I had, I thought this was a suspense movie about a salvage/rescue. No clue this was going to be a horror film. Imagine my surprise.

A spaceship that is built to resemble a cathedral disappears into a 'chaos dimension' filled with powerful, insatiably evil entities.
Hmm... now where have I heard something like that before...

There is an old story, I forget the source of offhand, about a man who dreamed of a fantastic machine. He was given the absolute tiniest detail of its construction, but only after building it he discovers it was the work of the devil. This story was the same basis that 13 Ghosts was based off of, Event Horizon has many similiar inspirations from it as well. There is an old short film called "The Clock-Maker's Secret" which was also based on this story. I imagine some of it also draws from the likes of Edgar Allen Poe among other things. Some might even say there was Lovecraftian inspiration, but I think this was less fantastical horror and more standard demonic gates of Hell horror. The inspiration of an amazing machine that promises to herald a new age of mankind, only for that 'new age' to actually turn out to be absolute horror is nothing new but the retelling of it can take so many incredible forms. When I saw this in the theatre, I had no idea what to expect and to this day, it's one of the few movies that I can visualize the imagery in with almost perfect clarity.

I saw this movie in the theater with a buddy. I knew nothing about the movie and we were the only two people in the theater. It made it one of the creepiest movies i have ever seen.

I went in blind back in 97. I thought it was going to be some sci-fi movie. Boy was I so wrong....it really messed me up watching it in the theatre.

Just the concept of traveling to the edge of the known universe is mind bending, then passing through into something so incomprehensible and horrifying profoundly frightened me at a level I hadn’t experienced before the first time I saw this picture, and it still gets me every time I see it. “Where we’re going you won’t need eyes to see…” RIP Sam Neill.

A huge missed opportunity for the movie, when Dr. Weir started calling the ship a 'her', and that she came back alive, it should have had a name. Like her name was Lilith or something. That would have made the ship truly alive.
